Focus on Flexibility for Better Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

Flexibility is really important. When we're young, we don't put a lot of thought into flexibility; it just comes naturally, so we don't have to. As we get older, we often fail to see the importance of flexibility -- that is, until it starts to disappear. The fact is that your body's ability to move affects everything. If you want better health and a more active lifestyle, it's important to focus on flexibility. How? Take a look at how and why flexibility should be a priority in your life.

The Importance of Flexibility

It's easy to overlook the importance of flexibility in our lives, but we need it every single day. It's only when we lose it that we realize how badly we need it in our normal routines. Just a few of the benefits of a flexible body include:

  • Mobility - Without the ability to move, our lives would look a lot different. We wouldn't be able to stay active, and this would lead to a decrease in overall health as well as long-term happiness.

  • Aging - Aging is hard enough; there's no reason to make it harder. If we don't maintain flexibility as we age, we may lose our ability to get around and enjoy life as the years go by.

  • Pain relief - If we don't maintain some flexibility, we open ourselves up to injury. We're also more likely to experience ongoing daily pain. Improving your flexibility can ease some pains and lower your risk of common injuries.

Ways to Stay Flexible

Staying flexible might sound difficult, but it's a lot easier than you think. First, make sure that you're active. Walk, jog, do aerobics. Just make sure that exercise is a normal part of your routine. Once you've made exercise a solid part of your life, include regular stretching. Plan a routine for first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. The more you stretch, the more flexible your body will become, and the more you'll reap the benefits of being loose and limber.

Flexibility is really important. We tend to forget this as we age, but it's crucial that we maintain some flexibility in our lives. Use these tips to improve your body's ability to move, and you may be able to reap these benefits plus a lot more in your overall health and wellness.
