4 Ways to Make Every Meal More Nutritious

By Brandi Goodman

March is National Nutrition Month. Take the time now to learn about the importance of nutrition and discover how you can make every meal more worthwhile. With just four steps you can ensure every meal is more nutritious and healthy to eat.

Include a Fruit and a Vegetable

Many people tend to have fruit with their breakfast but not a vegetable. Likewise, they'll eat vegetables at lunch at dinner time but never with breakfast. It's best to include both options at each meal, including snack time, to ensure you're getting in all your servings for the day. A few berries or half an apple is a good option for fruit. Adding some spinach to your eggs or breakfast sandwich is a good way to incorporate a vegetable.

Add More Protein

Protein is a necessary component for the body to heal itself and build muscle. You should add it to each meal if you want to ensure your body gets enough of it everyday. Lean meats are an excellent option. Nuts and nut butters, Greek yogurt, protein bars, protein shakes, and eggs are also great choices.

Choose Whole Grain Instead of White

Whether you're considering using bread for a sandwich, making a tortilla wrap, or picking a breakfast cereal, select whole grains instead of the typical white options. Whole grains are better sources of fiber and are more nutritious than white breads and flours. You will feel full for longer and receive a solid dose of vitamins and minerals.

Make Your Food at Home

Making your own food at home gives you more control over what you're putting in your body. It's not always easy to tell which menu items at restaurants are going to be the healthiest. A salad you think would be good for you at a restaurant could be loaded with sodium and dressing that adds far more calories than you need. Sticking to home-cooked meals helps you see exactly which ingredients are being used and allows you to take a look at the nutrition labels so you know the calorie count, amount of vitamins, and protein.

Nutrition is a key factor in overall health. Make sure all the meals you eat, including snacks, are full of healthy items that are worth putting into your body. Avoiding sugar and processed food will greatly help you improve your overall well-being and maintain a nutritious diet.
