The Sitting Issue Is Just Not Going Away

By Sandy Schroeder

Yes, we have all shaken our heads about sitting too much, and then headed right back to our computers, as if the warning does not apply to us! Denial is a popular state, and I confess, I am part of it, but maybe we all have to face facts to do something about it.

Sounding the Alarm

Yin Cao's research shows what is happening and where it is headed. Cao is a cancer epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis who co-authored a study on sitting in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Here's what she found in an analysis of the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey.

  • Adult and teen sitting increased an hour a day from 2007 to 2016, from 6.4 hours to 8.3 hours daily
  • By 2016, 50 percent of adults and 57 percent of teens spent at least an hour a day on the computer
  • As computers have become more available the numbers are building

Possible Solutions

Finding answers is a crucial health step for many of us.

Chair yoga exercises can be a reminder - As we get drawn into our work, or watch TV and browse online at home, our bodies are fixed in place. Five minutes of chair yoga, along with walking every hour could help.

Walking in place - Try it for one more quick moving break

Use an adjustable platform - Alternate between standing and sitting at work

Try an under-the-desk pedal machine - Pedal as you type or browse

Imposed breaks - Take some time off and forget to sit as much as possible. Park your phone and keep moving as you camp, bike, or hike. Work out with your kids at the park. Practice soccer, play volleyball, or shoot some hoops.

Subtract comfortable spots - Remove some of those automatic spots to sit and read, watch a game, or hover over phone screens. Use your treadmill or stationary bike to watch TV. Provide counters to stand and use phones or laptops.
