Children Need to Stretch Too!
By Donna Stark
You stretch in the morning. You stretch at work. You stretch before and after your workouts. You may even give your body a nice, long stretch before you go to bed. But do you know how often your children stretch? Have you even considered the benefits that they could get from doing the very same thing that you do? You know the importance of stretching and how it can make you feel, so why not share some of that goodness with them?
Children Need to Stretch Too
Exercise plays a huge role in the growth and development of children and it's great that you encourage yours to be as physically active as possible, but don't forget to teach them the importance of stretching as well. Stretching should be included in their daily fitness routine as well as yours because it benefits both the mind and the body. Take a look at how impactful it can be.
- Increases flexibility and coordination
- Improves joint stability and mobility
- Minimizes the risk of injuries
- Helps lengthen muscles
- Reduces muscle tension and fatigue
- Aids in relaxation and stress management

- Improves blood flow
Safety First!
Since many of us have been staying home and spending more time indoors over the past several months, it's more important than ever to encourage our children to exercise and stretch. But it has to be done safely! Here are a few safety tips they should know.
- Stretch before and after any strenuous physical activity
- Stretch regularly (schedule it into their daily routine)
- Breathe normally
- Hold stretches for about 10 to 30 seconds; no bouncing!
- Stretch to the point of slight discomfort only
- Stop immediately if it hurts
- Stretch both sides of the body evenly
