4 Tips for Jogging This Summer
By Virginia Laird
One of my favorite workouts is a nice leisurely jog. While it can be a great way to reduce stress, during the summer heat jogging can prove to be overwhelming. Health and wellness experts remind patients as the summer swiftly approaches it is imperative to make alterations to exercise routines which can help prevent heat related illnesses. A few tips these professionals have encouraged everyone to adhere to include:
- Hydrate often
- Plan your jog in the early morning or late evening
- Charge your devices
- Be determined
Hydrate Often
Staying hydrated can be a struggle, especially for those who do not routinely choose water. Research suggests that heat-related illnesses are generally brought on where there is a lack of hydration. This can cause the body to shut down in the brutal heat. While jogging, it is best to make certain to sip on water along the path. Many health and wellness experts suggest that drinking a sports drink after the run can help replenish the body of lost salt, which is caused from sweating. Failure to replenish what is lost while sweating can cause severe muscle cramps. It is advised that you should consume at least half of your body weight in ounces of water or sports drinks each day to maintain proper hydration.
Plan Your Jog in the Early Morning or Late Evening
When the heat wave of summer arrives, it will not be a good idea to run outdoors during the “heat of the day.” This is generally considered to be between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Health and wellness experts advise it best to be in tune to the forecast. Know the heat index and the temperatures before heading out the door. Planning your jog in the early morning hours or the late evening can help you avoid issues with summer heat.
Charge Your Devices
Do yourself a favor and charge your devices fully before lacing up your jogging shoes. I don’t ever mind a long run, but much over a mile and I need some serious motivation tunes. With the heat of the summer, it is easy to give in before you have really ever begun. If this is you, and your devices are not charged, you may be tempted to stop your workout as soon as they die. To ensure your exercise is a success, take time to charge all the devices you need along your route. It can help keep you moving during the heat wave that is summer.
Be Determined
Are you one who can easily stop an exercise once you have begun? This is the best way to never see progress. Health and wellness experts advise you should always be determined to complete your routine once you begin. To help you be successful, never plan for more than you can handle. If today doesn't seem like a great one, plan a short one-mile jog rather than a lengthy one. Help yourself be successful by planning appropriately for you.
Now that you are ready to begin racking up some mileage, get out there and get to jogging!
