Swimming Recommendations From the Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

Swimming is a common summer activity, but that doesn't mean everyone does it properly. You can actually hurt yourself while swimming if you aren't careful. Keep some swimming recommendations from the chiropractor in mind so you can fully enjoy your swim session without worry.

Stretch Well

Just as with any physical activity you plan on doing, you need to stretch out your body well before you swim. It's important to fully stretch your joints to ensure their flexibility and allow yourself to utilize your full range of motion. Fail to stretch out properly and you may quickly hurt yourself in the process. Swimmer's shoulder is a common injury due to the vigorous arm movements you do in the water.

Try to Swim Differently

If you're just swimming for fun, you probably aren't overexerting yourself or following a certain stroke pattern. If you're using swimming as exercising and training in water, you may be focusing on using the breaststroke or butterfly. These options are actually tough on your spine. They can cause you to arch your back too much and result in discomfort. Try to swim differently, focusing on the backstroke that keeps your spine inline, or a freestyle approach. Avoid arching your back while you're in the water.

Take a Water Aerobics Class

Rather than getting in the water and attempting to exercise at your own risk, you may want to give a water aerobics class a try first. The instructor will teach you proper form and ensure you're swimming and exercising in a safe manner. Once you have it down, you'll be able to do it on your own with ease.

Stay Hydrated

Just because you're in water doesn't mean your body is getting enough water to stay hydrated. You should drink plenty before you start swimming to keep your muscles and joints from aching. You'll be more flexible and prevent injury if you're properly hydrated. Take water breaks between swimming sessions and make sure you get plenty to drink after you've finished as well to help with recovery.

Swimming should be a fun exercise option throughout the summer season when it's warm. You can even enjoy it all-year-round at indoor facilities. Don't forget to keep these chiropractic recommendations in mind, though. You want to be as safe and careful as possible while swimming and engaging in other activities so they don't result in injury.
