Let the Music Play for Better Health
By Tom Herrin
When engaged in that ongoing search for something to improve health, people are usually willing to try a lot of things. Even those who appear to be all-in may sometimes come up short because they are limiting their perspective to that perfect exercise program or that miracle food or diet. Other options may provide ways to support health every bit as much without the sacrifice that often goes along with these things. One of those that people may already do to some extent without realizing the possible benefits is listening to music. Certain beats or types of sound may serve some special purposes. Jazz is a type of music that has long been associated with certain things that affect health.
It May Sharpen Focus
Jazz has been used for years as something that may do some good things for mood or relaxation. It also seems to have the ability to help people to focus and have productive energy. Many people are able to use it for exercising successfully. It apparently helps to achieve a good heart rate. For those who are in jobs or other pursuits that require creativity, listening to jazz may help to focus to the extent of tapping into those things needed for such activities.
It May Help with Stroke Recovery
Music therapy has been used much more in recent years with considerably good results. It has shown promise for actually impacting recovery from many illnesses. For those having experienced stroke, listening to jazz during recovery improved verbal memory 60 percent as opposed to only 29 percent for those who did not. Focused attention increased 17 percent for listeners while there was no improvement for those who did not.
It May Help Relieve Stress
No matter what we do, we all seem to be affected by stress. It is often taken for granted that people may listen to music to relax and reduce tension in their lives. A more scientific approach reveals that the beat of jazz can do more than simply make us relax but lessen depression and improve sleep. It is one of my favorite ways to get a better night’s sleep. I tend to be easily distracted, or awakened, when I am trying to sleep. Listening to jazz helps me. For a different kind of approach to improving health, try listening to a little jazz.
