Is It Really Possible to Replace a Meal?
By Tom Herrin
When people are struggling to determine exactly how to use food to improve their health, they often find that there are plenty of options. Whether or not they are all valid is another thing. In this world of instant everything, products are marketed with numbers in mind. Selling the largest amount possible of any given thing may be the real determining factor as to whether or not it is a good product -- or so it seems. This may mask the issues related to it. Phen-phen was a popular item with dieters but had disastrous results. Meals need to serve a purpose and such things as replacements must do so as well. While many choose to skip it, breakfast in some form has an important place in the daily diet.
It May Help Manage Cholesterol
What people consume for their first meal of the day can have quite an effect on the rest of the day. Eating foods that are high in fats may be useful in some cases while eating foods that are high in soluble fibers may be a key to balancing out the rest of the day. Those who eat oats for breakfast are proven to have lower amounts of bad cholesterol, or LDL, as well as a few other things. This may have a lasting benefit for the cardiovascular system and head off problems that many people develop as a result of bad choices.
It May Improve Digestion
It is not uncommon for people to experience digestive issues. Much of this is directly related to what they eat at the beginning of the day. It is important to take in a sufficient amount of fiber early and help encourage the body to naturally improve itself. Taking in good fiber in the morning can help the body throughout the day. When people are able to have their colon function as it should, it can prevent many problems such as cancers later.
It May Help Manage Appetite
A lot of us have trouble with what we eat and when we eat. Sometimes this may be because we are hungry and sometimes it is simply habit. If we eat a breakfast that meets our personal needs, we are more likely to feel satisfied and fuller. We are less likely to snack. Analyze your needs and personalize your diet. It also may vary by time of the year and our activity. The main thing is to eat something at the start of the day that can contribute to better health throughout that day.
