Your Goals Should Focus You in Cool Weather

By Tom Herrin

Most people use something to motivate them to do whatever they do.  Even though that motivation may be unconscious, it is still there.  In order to be in control of their lives, it is always better to be more aware of exactly what they are trying to do.  For many, the best way to do this is to set goals.  For those who have tried to do some kind of working out in cooler weather, they likely know that it often takes a certain commitment to get out there in those conditions.  The term "warming up" may take on several new meanings.

Wear Clothes That Are Easily Removed

Going out in the cold can be a shock to the system.  One of the biggest problems can be that people wear what is comfortable when they walk out the door only to begin feeling too warm shortly after they begin the activity.  When they wear layers that are easy to remove, it can make the experience more positive.  While they may not be going home every time they need to take something off, they can wear things that can be tied around their waist or tossed in a lightweight backpack.

Some Things May Be Done Indoors

Even though many runners or bike riders prefer to be outdoors, it is important to remember that some things can be done indoors with reasonable success.  Alternating some of these activities can keep a little variety in the routine while still preserving those favorites for those times when it is possible.  The point is to continue to work on condition so that progress is not lost due to modifications in the schedule.

Goals Should Be Realistic but Challenging

In order to get anything worthwhile done, we have to set some kind of goals.  When it is cooler, it can be pretty easy to step outside and go right back in.  When we set a goal, it should be attainable.  Deciding to go a certain predetermined distance or reach a certain level of work can help us to see our progress.  I like to use goals that are pretty simple.  It is amazing how much difference it can make.  Rather than simply going until we are tired, it can be much more encouraging to go until we reach that goal.  We can build a feeling of accomplishment as well as improving our condition at the same time.
