Shut Up and Dance for Your Health

By Tom Herrin

People do a lot of talking about doing something to make their health better.  There are times when it may seem like all talk and not enough do.  Rather than simply talk about it, why not get up and do something?  It may be those small steps that can make a real difference in health.  The upside of modern times is that there are so many advances and conveniences.  The downside is that, so many times, something else is doing much of the work that people once did for themselves.  Making the move to get out of the chair or off the couch may be one of the best things that can be done.

Getting Older Is No Excuse for Getting Less Activity

Some people seem to feel that when they reach a certain age, they are entitled to sit out the remainder of their lives.  This may only serve to shorten it or lessen the quality.  A familiar phrase for this is sometimes that such a person is "waiting to die."  Retiring from all activity may appear to be that.  It has been supposed that fewer than 20 percent of individuals 65 or older get the amount of exercise that is recommended for them.  This is normally about three hours per week of moderate exercise.  It is not that difficult.  Grabbing someone and dancing to a few songs can be an easy way to have fun while exercising.

Find Ways to Ditch the Easy Way

Being guilty of succumbing to the temptation of taking it easy is pretty common.  Most people would turn their noses up at purchasing a television without a remote, but setting that remote aside and making the effort to get up and adjust volume, channel, or something else by hand may actually help to get a little more exercise.  Drive-thru restaurants are great, but getting out of the car and walking inside to order and make a purchase may be better.  It seems that one of the big things now is curbside grocery shopping.  People can order online and drive up and have someone deliver their order to the parking lot.  Some have even gone back to the old practice of delivering groceries to their homes.

Remember Who We Are

It may sound strange to say that we need to remember who we are, but we are people that are members of the animal kingdom. Getting someone to do everything for us is not going to make us any healthier.  I try to find ways to do something that takes a little effort.  Parking a little greater distance from the entry to a store or walking inside that restaurant can help some.  I try to walk or ride my bicycle for little errands rather than take the car.  You may surprise yourself just how much you can do by fine-tuning your routine just a bit.
