Change Your Bag and Shoes to Protect the Back
By Genevieve Cunningham
Sometimes suffering from back pain seems like the absolute worst case scenario. Why? Because many types of back pain seem to be a mystery. We have no idea what causes it, and therefore finding an appropriate cure feels impossible. But what if easing back pain were easier than you originally thought? What if, instead of turning to medication or back braces or complicated procedures, all you had to do was change a few things about your current wardrobe? For some people, this may be exactly the case. Take a look at how paying special attention to your bag and shoes may make all the difference in protecting your back long-term.
What’s the Harm in a Bag?
Not all bags are harmful to the back. It all depends on the make, the weight, and the way in which it’s carried. If a bag is too heavy or is constantly slung over one shoulder, it can pull the muscles and bones in the back toward one side, which then leads to discomfort. The solution? Lighten the load! A small, light bag generally does very little damage to the back. If lightening the load won’t work, it can also be useful to grab a backpack and wear it with one strap over each shoulder, thus distributing the weight and easing potential back pain.
How Do the Shoes Cause Pain?
Shoes are notorious for causing pain! If a shoe is unsupportive, it can be felt in the feet as well as up into the back and even the neck in extreme cases. Supportive shoes should be comfortable, have a strong arch, and stay on the feet with minimal effort. Shoes to avoid (or to wear sparingly) include flip-flops, high heels, and extremely low flats. By simply choosing the appropriate footwear, you can save both your back and body a lot of wear and tear.
What Else Can Be Done?
Besides ensuring that these two accessory items are supportive of the back, it can also be beneficial to get regular chiropractic care. Chiropractors will focus on the spine specifically. They’ll look for joint restrictions occurring in the vertebrae of the spine, and then correct those areas using spinal manipulation. With these small wardrobe adjustments and some regular visits to the clinic, a better back may be in the near future.
