Challenging Your Mind Can Keep You Young

By Tom Herrin

Everyone gets older.  We all have those times when we feel like we may be losing our sharpness.  It may happen when we forget what we went to the store for.  We may forget where we were going when we left the house.  We all have times when we forget where we put something in our home.  None of this means we are going out of our minds, but mental alertness can be improved.  We can exercise our minds just like our muscles.  Our interactions with others can improve at the same time.  All we have to do is increase our awareness.

What You Eat Plays A Part

Eating healthy affects more than the numbers on our bathroom scales.  Healthy foods are a critical part of keeping our brain in shape to function as it should.  Many people who suffer from memory loss may do so because of a hardening of the arteries.  Cholesterol and other such problems can restrict blood flow.  This results in less oxygen supplied to the brain.  The opposite can be true when we eat a diet low in saturated fats but high in fish oils and plenty of fresh vegetables.  These can combat problems with blood pressure and other circulatory problems.

Physical Exercise Is Always Good

When we are active, we will improve our body’s ability to function.  Exercise in general improves the way our cells operate.  It can also help us to manage stress.  When we exercise regularly, we are usually able to sleep more productively.  Adequate rest is always a big factor in brain sharpness.  If we are short on quality sleep, it can be very similar to being impaired by alcohol or drugs.  Our reaction time is slowed.  Exercise can improve our response time as well.

Mind Games Are No Joke

Studies show that people who are more educated have less chance of dementia.  This is believed to be related to the amount of mental activity we have.  When we put our brains to rest, they tend to deteriorate.  They really do decrease in size as we age, so we don’t need to give them that opportunity.  We should strive to always be learning something new.  Reading new information is much more than reading a newspaper or online publication.  We need to activate our minds by making a real attempt to learn new material.  It should be something that truly challenges us.  If we do this, we can expect our brain to be as active as we would like to be.
