Creating With Your Hands May Delay Aging

By Tom Herrin

Many people suffer from the effects of all the wear they endure in their jobs.  The constant intake of information in this age can take a toll on the mind and emotions.  It is pretty easy to become depressed and overwhelmed with the demands of work.  In order to preserve health and sanity, people need to find an outlet that can occupy their minds and change their focus.  For generations, working with their hands has been a great way for people to accomplish this while creating something worthwhile.  It also has some other great secondary benefits.

Using The Mind Can Keep It Sharp

With the increase of dementia that seems to be affecting so many people today, there is quite a bit of concern and attention to the situation.  One of the things that researchers have found is that the more the brain is used for cognitive thought, the better the chance that mental abilities will be improved.  It is very much similar to the effects of exercise on maintaining the physical parts of the body that can break down and deteriorate without such work.  Maintenance can be a great help in good health.

It Can Create Peace And Tranquility

Working with the hands requires a certain amount of focus and concentration.  As people become engaged in crafting, they must be mentally in tune with the product they are attempting to create.  Training the hands to yield intricate designs or details can take a lot.  Such intense attention to the work can virtually block out ordinary distractions people deal with every day.  It can serve to tune out voices as well as the mass of media material that so often races through the mind.

It Does Not Require Any Prerequisites

Learning to work with your hands to develop a skill is easier than it may seem.  Gaining a high degree of that skill does take considerable work and study; however, it is the kind of work that you may be easily motivated to do once you catch the fever.  In other words, once you begin, the enjoyment of crafting may be the driving force for you.  If you don’t know where to start, try browsing around a craft store or craft fair.  You are sure to find something that sparks your interest.  Don’t be afraid to give it a try.  It may be that fountain of youth that could improve your health.
