Planning Together Can Improve Survival Chances
By Tom Herrin
A look around has given insight into some of the serious consequences of disasters that can occur. Many people have experienced a considerable amount of suffering and loss. Much of it has been totally unexpected due to the widespread nature of the many problems people have had. While many have braced for the storm surge of hurricanes, it has been the torrential rain upstream that actually caused the greatest threat. The unpredictability of natural disasters makes them very difficult to plan for. However, it is possible to make a plan that can meet varying needs if people will simply put a little thought into their plan.
Imagine The Worst Case Scenarios
The key to planning successfully is to expect the unexpected. Even if people live in areas that have never experienced certain kinds of emergency situations, a generic plan can give people the confidence to survive any obstacles. People need to expect loss of public services, power, and food supplies. Too many times, when people are isolated by disasters, there may be an extended period of time when no shipments can reach stores to resupply. If this happens, panic often ensues.
The Most Basic Things Should Be Stored Ready To Use Or Carry
One of the biggest problems can be water supply. Bottled water should be stored, enough for a few days supply. After that, food that does not require cooking is another essential. It is particularly important to have food that can be eaten without adding water since that may be limited. If these two things are in supply, people will be able to function without making irrational decisions based on desperation. People should also store and know how to use first aid supplies. Copies of important documents can also be very helpful, especially if people are displaced.
Educate Everyone On Useful Resources
If all family members know where to listen and go for help, they can do so if they become separated. While communication can help, it is possible that cell towers will be down and all major forms of communication will be lost for a time. Assume the most severe situation will happen. If all family members will plan together, they will increase their survival chances in disasters. Planning for the worst and hoping for the best will always be the most prudent way.
Also important is being in good health to withstand the turmoil your life will be in. Don't take your health for granted, either. It may save your life.
