Remember to Give Those Hugs

By Tom Herrin

Some people are the touchy type while others are much more reserved.  It doesn’t make one good and one bad, but there is something to be said about being more tactile.  When kids are involved, they need more touching. Since it seems that this current culture that surrounds all of us has shifted to so much impersonal communication, making the effort to have more contact can be a great investment of time and effort.  Hugs are irreplaceable and far too few. This simple act can do more than a little to boost health in many ways.

They Can Help Fears Go Away

Everyone is familiar with the need to comfort children when they are afraid.  Many of those fears are very real and can have lasting effects on the lives of those who have them.  A child who is consoled about their fears can gain greater personal confidence and feel better about their ability to deal with their problems.  They are very likely to become better decision makers.

They May Improve the Heart

In studies, it has been shown that people who are not hugged may develop a faster heartbeat.  This can produce more wear on the heart. Indications are that a slower heartbeat can move more blood with less effort.  This saves a lot of stress on it and helps to keep it stronger. Hugs also have the ability to lower blood pressure. This is another way of preserving the health of the heart.  Higher blood pressure places additional stress on it, thereby causing numerous problems. Most people have probably had the feeling of their blood pressure dropping when they are involved in a good hug.

They May Relieve Stress

Stress is a problem for a lot of people.  Whether it is from work, school, driving, finances, or some other cause, stress can do considerable damage to the body.  When we can find ways to reduce some of it, we can enjoy better health physically and emotionally. Far too many family problems are related to stress that one or more of the family members is under.  If we can relieve some of it effectively, we may be able to be more productive in our work and family relations. Our lives may feel and be more productive. Our relationships can grow much stronger.
