The Cold Should Not Make You a Slacker

By Tom Herrin

When it comes to making up excuses, most people can come up with some pretty good ones.  If they are excuses about whether they should work out or not, the list can get pretty long.  Some people even claim to be waiting for their doctor to tell them to do so.  As the temperatures change and it becomes cooler, a good excuse is that it is just too cold.  While it is true that the cold can have a negative effect on the body when it involves the muscles and other soft tissue, there are ways to deal with it that can take away those excuses and put a person back in the driver's seat as far as maintaining an exercise program.

Getting Up Is a Start

While it may sound oversimplified, getting out of bed is a great first step.  For some people, getting a few more minutes of shut-eye can be a valid reason to stay in bed.  Even for those who don't enjoy working out in the morning, getting up can serve to build self-discipline.  For those who prefer exercising a little later in the day, maintaining a standing position can help them to avoid that tendency to sit down and unwind.  This can ruin a lot of potential workouts.

Establish a Schedule

Many times, people have a kind of schedule in their minds about what they will do in their program.  As the temps become colder, it may require a little more set schedule.  As the saying goes, a goal not written is a goal not fulfilled.  Taking the time to write down a schedule can force people to give it more thought.  They will need to consider just how to go about carrying it out.  Reviewing it weekly or on some other regular basis can help to evaluate progress or lack thereof.

Clothes May Make the Person and the Workout

There is nothing wrong with wearing warmer clothing as it gets colder.  If we wear layers, we can adjust better as we burn calories and warm ourselves up.  We can simply carry a lightweight backpack or affix the clothes to us in some fashion so that we don't have to carry them in our hands.  There are so many kinds of high tech clothes today that we no longer have to be uncomfortable when we wear them.  Look around, and you are likely to find that there are far more things available than you may have believed.
