Those Who Walk May Need to Sharpen Technique
By Tom Herrin
Most people likely feel that walking is just a matter of getting out there and doing it. It is one of those things that seems to be second nature. They began walking as a young child and simply kept doing it. If there is a problem, it may be that people developed some bad habits and never corrected them. It may not make much difference until they begin walking more and longer. Many have seen someone who had a "hitch" in their step. This is seen as some kind of problem that interferes with their normal walk. Many may never be aware that they have a problem, but it can make a considerable difference when they try to walk more.
It Always Helps to Stand Tall
Posture is one of those things that people always need to improve, or so it seems. When they hold their bodies more upright, they are able to breathe more efficiently. It also helps to avoid some aches and pains often associated with being humped over. Bringing the stomach in more can help to train muscles somewhat to support the body in better form. Focusing on a point about 20 feet ahead can help to keep the head in a better angle.
A Good Stride Can Be Learned
Anyone can develop a better stride with a little practice. One of the key elements is to hit with the heel first, then roll through the foot, finally to push off with the toes. The longer the feet are in contact with the ground, the better it is. For the purpose of effective movement, the push of the feet behind the body will do more good than a lot of reach in front. That longer stride in front may not be the best use of energy.
Take a Friend
If you want to get the most out of your walk, invite someone to go along with you. This can serve a couple of purposes. One thing that may be done is to watch one another to assess just how each one walks. If you are wanting to improve, someone else's viewpoint may provide new light. Another thing is that it is often more enjoyable to have a little company. If each of you has a mission to help each other to improve, it adds a little more benefit.
