Do You Feel in the Dark When Working Shifts?

By Tom Herrin

In today's job market, many people end up with jobs that are primarily for survival.  Though jobs have been more plentiful in recent times in some areas, those who are looking may not be able to be too choosy.  Finding the prime job may not always be possible, but there lots of good jobs that can provide good wages.  Some of these require people to work shifts.  At one time, this was mostly for those in production or some kind of public service.  Today there so many odd work times, there is greater demand for many in retail to work shifts as well.  The number of those who work in shifts is estimated to be up to 10 or even 15 million, by some estimates.  While many of them are good jobs, working these kinds of hours can take a toll on health.

Sleep Issues and General Illness May Show

Anytime people turn their schedules around, it can be difficult on everything they do.  Sleeping when others are working or playing can be a pretty big challenge.  Many who attempt this never seem to sleep really well.  Sleep disorders are common and may be enhanced.  Studies have shown that there may be a greater risk of developing problems involving the heart or diabetes when people work shifts.  Regularly monitoring these things could be important.

Improve Personal Management

Many people fail to pay much attention to their health until they have a problem.  This may be too late for those who get into a pattern that affects their lifestyle.  No matter what they do, forming good eating habits is always good.  Another thing that is a must is exercise.  Everyone needs it, but it may be more critical for those who work shifts as they can end up being removed from everyone else.

Find Ways to Be Included

When we work shifts, it is easy to be almost forgotten.  Other family members get used to the idea that we are asleep at odd times and may work when they are asleep.  Planning ahead for activities that involve the entire family can help.  If we work evenings, maybe we can plan activities for a time when we have gotten an adequate amount of sleep and would be up and around anyway.  Eat some meals with the family.  This can help to maintain social ties as well as provide a few more quality meals.  We don't have to give up on health if we work shifts, but we need to make some good adjustments.
