Colors May Be a Great Measure of Healthy Meals

By Tom Herrin

There are not too many set standards for ways to measure the health of meals other than putting them through the mill.  That is, analyzing each food and what it has to contribute to the whole.  All of that is not necessary for people to boost the healthiness of those meals.  A much easier way is to add colors if you're looking for a healthier meal.  It simply takes a little creativity and a desire to do it.  Putting those brown and white meals aside and getting on the color bandwagon may take meals to a place many thought they could not go.  It is not so much philosophy as it is looking for the least amount of work to accomplish a task.

Blue Foods Are Powerful

A few years back, there seemed to be a new awareness of foods that are blue, or purple.  It suddenly became known that they are full of things that can have a positive impact on health.  Some of them are believed to protect cells from damage, boost memory, and help fight inflammation.  Some of them go really well with breakfast while others may be eaten any time of day.  A few on this list are purple cabbage, eggplant, plums, figs, and blueberries.

Reds Are Bright and Tasty

When people see red on a plate, it has the ability to create an attractive dish.  It seems to set off the meal and balance the other colors present.  They are much more than just looks, though, as they may add some pretty good properties to those meals.  Some of them are believed to improve skin, reduce the risks of some heart disease, and cut the chances of diabetes.  They are pretty diverse themselves.  A few of them are beets, red onions, strawberries, cherries, and pomegranate.

Colors Are an Easy Way of Getting Around Extra Work

Most of us prefer to look for the easiest way to make changes without a lot of studying.  In order to enhance the healthiness of our meals, all we have to do is add that color.  We can get creative and pick colors out of thin air.  We can follow that by trying to find foods that fit that color.  If we get the entire family engaged in this effort, they may feel a greater sense of ownership.  If they do that, the hope is that they will be more willing to try new foods.  That is always a good thing.
