Is Getting a Vaccine Taking a Chance?
By Tom Herrin
The nature of a pandemic is that it is a serious health issue that spreads worldwide. The one we have all been experiencing in the past year has infected millions and killed hundreds of thousands. Researchers have been working around the clock to find ways to treat the disease or vaccinate for it. As these vaccines have been tested on thousands of volunteers, results have looked extremely promising for many of them. They are now being made available to those who are considered to be at the greatest risk. While the supply may not be limitless, some of these vaccines will eventually be offered to the rest of us. Waiting for that day to come may be a mistake. We all need to gather as much information as possible so that we will be able to make the best decision for us when the time comes.
It May Be a Chance Worth Taking
When we look at the results of many of the successful vaccines of the past, it is striking to see how some diseases have been greatly diminished or eradicated. Beginning with smallpox, these vaccines have been for measles, mumps, rubella, polio, meningitis, and many others. Some of these vaccines have been able to protect people from what could have become life-threatening diseases.
It May Be Taking a Risk
Some individuals have issues with taking vaccines relating due to their own immune responses. Others may have some kind of allergies to something used in the manufacturing process. Some of the vaccines of the past also had problems that related to using a live or dead virus in the process. Reactions included fever, soreness, muscle weakness, sleep problems, and seizures. Many simply fear taking something into their bodies that is foreign.
Take Time to Study and Reflect
With so much at stake this time around, it is well worth taking our time making a decision. We will be far better off going to the effort to make that decision early. While it may seem that most of us have several months to decide, those months will pass fast. We may even have a choice as to which vaccine to take. I am gathering all of the information I can on each one now so that I will be prepared when the time arrives. For me personally, I am leaning toward playing the odds.
