Some Healthy Drinks Have a History

By Tom Herrin

Searching for healthy drinks may take us all kinds of places.  For those of us who are really concerned about health, covering all of the bases is important.  We likely exercise, try to get the right amount of sleep, and eat right.  What we drink can play an important part in overall health as well.  Since we are all individuals, we must consider our individual needs.  What is best for one may not be so much for another, so studying and making good personal decisions is as critical here as with any other part of managing our health.

Cranberry Juice Has a Good Track Record

For years, many people have touted the benefits of cranberry juice.  Some have done so because of its generally good results as a treatment or preventative for urinary tract infections.  It is high in fiber which may help with digestion and cause us to feel fuller longer.  Cranberries are believed to lower blood sugar.  They may also help with cholesterol and lower blood pressure.  These are some pretty good reasons to include cranberry as a juice.

Lemon Water Is Old News

When many of us have gone to restaurants, we may have been served water with a slice of lemon on the edge of the glass.  Some of us may have squeezed it into the water while others may have simply set it aside.  We are better off to add it to the water.  Lemon is known to have a good supply of Vitamin C which is always beneficial and is thought to serve as an immune booster.  It is also believed to be a good natural diuretic.  It is light and contains virtually no calories.

Making Your Own Drink Is a Safe Bet

Adding flavor to water can be a good way to create a drink that is personal and tasty.  Many restaurants offer all kinds of flavors that may be added to water to enhance flavor.  You can even do it at home, if you choose.  Some flavors that are not fruits, such as chocolate or vanilla, are pretty popular.  The fruit choices seem almost endless.  Many choose cherry or grape.  I almost always select lime and strawberry to add to water for a light strawberry limeade taste.  Try for yourself, and see what you come up with.  It can be fun.
