In Some Cases, Milk May Not Be for You

By Tom Herrin

All of our lives, we have probably been told to drink our milk.  That was for good reason.  It is pretty much the most important food source during our early years.  If we had nothing else to eat but that, we could get by for quite a while.  It is in every school meal program.  It is known to help build strong bones and muscles.  As we grow, we tend to evolve into different eating preferences.  Milk is often moved way down the list as we shift to other things.  Some almost never drink milk while others continue to have it on a daily basis.

Milk May Help the Heart

In the last several years, many of those involved in building health have advocated for the idea of using skim milk, or milk with no fat.  It sounded good but also had some shortcomings.  Many now propose that drinking milk with fat may actually be pretty good for the heart and circulatory system.  It is believed to raise good cholesterol and help to lower blood pressure.  It may even be beneficial for some diabetics.

Milk Can Be Detrimental to Health for Some

While it can do some great things, milk may cause some serious issues for some individuals.  Some are sensitive to the sugar, or lactose.  Others have problems with digesting one of the proteins.  It is referred to as A1.  It has also been linked to adult acne and prostate cancer.  Being aware of our individual needs is important.  It is one of those things that we must be diligent in monitoring and finding all of the information possible if we are one who drinks milk.

There Are Still Options

For those of us who feel that we need what milk has to offer, we may try some alternatives.  Some drink milk from goats with success.  Others drink milk that is labeled lactose-free.  There are brands of milk that purport to be free of A1 and are labeled as A2.  I drink a glass of almond milk each night since it is higher in calcium.  For me, the vanilla hits the spot, but there are many other flavors.  It can often be used as any other milk.  If you are looking for a good alternative because of problems with cows' milk, you may want to give one of these others a try.
