Breathing Well Counts

By Tom Herrin

No matter what we do, it is pretty hard to skip some things.  Our life functions are pretty much dictated by the necessities we have.  We must have food to eat, water to drink, and air to breathe.  At times, we may decide to adjust our food intake to provide a better supply of what we need.  The nutrients, calories, etc., are all part of what we consider.  When it comes to breathing, we may feel we have very little choice.  This isn't really the case as we can actually have more control over our breathing than we may realize.  Like so many other things we do, breathing well may be enhanced by things that have been learned by those who have done studies.

Practice Can Make Improvement

We have all heard that practice makes perfect, but it may not always be the case.  Good practice can certainly help to make improvement much of the time.  Many individuals who must depend on better breathing have learned that they can have more efficiency with their breathing if they will have better practices.  This may include using their lips, diaphragm, nose, or some other body part.  Some even practice while making some kind of a noise.  When we learn better technique in whatever we do, our results are generally good.

Support Our Immune System

Most of us are concerned about our immune system, particularly today.  We want it to be as strong as possible.  Better breathing may help us to take in, and use, oxygen in a more productive way.  It may also help to remove unwanted things.  In some cases, it may remove some bacteria and bad gases that can accumulate.  Increasing our lung capacity by the right kinds of activities may help us to be able to better manage some respiratory problems that many of us have.

Learn to Relax

Breathing is an important part of living.  If we are to remain healthy, we have to be able to relax as well as be active.  Many people struggle with this.  Better relaxation enables us to improve focus as well as take those important timeouts we may need on occasion.  Good breathing habits may also help us to fall asleep and stay that way.  Whenever I have trouble sleeping, I try to focus on using controlled breathing.  It can be a big help.
