Pets May Boost Health, Too

By Tom Herrin

As we look for ways to make ourselves healthier, the list can be long.  The standard things such as exercise, rest, and diet can sometimes be replaced.  While these basics will always hold true, some other things can be done that may trigger our bodies to become healthier.  As a child, I always had some kind of a pet.  It was mostly dogs, and we generally had more than one.  I enjoyed playing with them and being with them.  I had not idea that they may be serving some kind of useful purpose as far as health was concerned.  Some believe today that having a pet, and interacting with it on a regular basis, may be a way to support better health.

Pets and Hormones

It is widely known that hormones play an important role in our health.  Cortisol is one that we have to help us when we are under stress.  It helps us to protect ourselves, but we also tend to have a lot of it when we are under any other kind of emotional stress.  As a result, it may be hard on our health.  It is believed that having a pet may help to reduce the levels of this hormone.  Another important hormone is oxytocin.  This one makes us feel good, so the more we have, the better we feel.  It seems that having a pet may boost our levels of this hormone.

Pets Can Exercise With Us

Most pets need some kind of exercise.  If we get involved in doing this with them, we will benefit as well.  The more of it we do, the more we tend to enjoy it.  It serves to motivate us.  While it will seldom be very aggressive exercise, it can still be moderate.  In many cases, this is much better than little or none that we may be getting if we sat around.

We All Need Company

Even for those of us who are loners, we need someone around.  A pet is easy to talk to and always eager to listen.  They are generally happy to see us when we arrive home, and they provide us an opportunity to have someone to be responsible for.  If you ever enjoy having a pet, it is worthwhile to get one.  It may do just enough for your health to make it work.
