Let Games Boost Your Health

By Tom Herrin

If you want to maintain good health, you will need to eat right, get enough rest, and exercise.  Some individuals can jump right in and begin a program of exercise.  For them, it is time to get on it.  Others have trouble dealing with the grind of a program that is too repetitive.  They find it difficult to stay motivated.  They become bored and may fall back into habits of sedentary behavior.  If you really want to get some good exercise, there are plenty of things you can do.  There are all kinds of games and activities that are outside of the ordinary.  You can be as creative as you want as you look for something that is fun and exciting.

Start Simple

When we refer to something that is simple, it should be something that requires no special equipment or expertise.  At the top of that list may be jumping rope.  You probably did it as a child, but you have long since forgotten.  It can be an activity that may build coordination as well as endurance.  There have been many programs that include jumping rope as a part of it.  Most of them are geared towards jumping for a set length of time.  Jumping rope is something that may be done while jogging, watching television, or listening to music.  It is basic and very inexpensive.  You can also take a rope with you wherever you go.

Try the Batting Cages

If you ever played baseball or softball, you may have spent some time in the batting cages.  They are a good way to improve your hitting.  They can be found all around and are fairly readily available.  With these, you may want to set goals or targets to work toward.  While using them would probably not be considered to be heavy exercise, they may be moderate.  If you spend a while in them, you will definitely exert some energy.  You may enjoy it enough to go once a week or so, but that is still enough to keep you moving and have some variety.

Tennis Can Be a Good Outlet

If you are going to play a game, it may help to play one with a partner.  Tennis is a game that will get you moving but allow you to have help from someone else.  This can lighten the load for those who are working on condition but maybe not there yet.  As you get in better shape, you may want to play more singles as this will be more demanding.  I certainly have much more incentive when I play a game.  When I was a little younger, I enjoyed playing cutthroat in racquetball as it would give me a little break but keep me moving.
