Simple Games Can Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

When people are trying to improve their health, they may be willing to look at just about anything.  There are plenty of programs available along with a few gimmicks.  They can sign up for just about any kind of lessons they choose.  Sometimes the answers can be a lot simpler than that.  There are some games that most of us played as kids that actually can provide some really good benefits when it comes to our overall health as we get older.  One of these that just about everybody has played at some time is table tennis.

It Can Improve Coordination

Table tennis is a pretty fast game in that the ball actually moves at a pretty good speed.  In a competitive game, there is a steady thump of the paddle hitting the ball.  People have to shift and move with the play.  This can improve balance as well as hand-eye coordination.  Reflexes can be improved.  There is also some strategy in the game.  The opportunity to improve anticipation is also there.

It Is Actually Healthy Exercise

Table tennis is one of those activities that is generally considered to be low stress.  This means that good exercise is available without placing stress on the joints.  It also burns calories as people move and react.  While burning calories may not always be specific to losing weight, people need to burn calories to enable their bodies to function properly.  Another thing that is significant is that when people burn calories, they also are able to increase mental awareness.  The older we get, the more concern we often have about increasing our mental abilities.

It Can Be A Good Social Activity

Table tennis is a good game for just about all ages.  Older people can play without the risk of injury or overexertion.  Young children can usually play, if modifications are made.  It can be a really good family game.  Many others play in individual games or tournaments.  The opportunity for people to be involved with other people can be mentally and emotionally constructive. It can help to keep the spirits up and avoid depression. This is another thing that is critical to those in the older age group.  If you are considering an activity or game that can provide physical and mental workouts, table tennis is a good one to think about.
