Smile Away Pain and Worries

By Tom Herrin

Most people would truly like to make positive changes in their life and improve their health as well.  There are plenty of things available to do both.  Some may be very effective and others not so much.  Cost is another thing that can vary wildly.  For those who want to begin to make some good changes with little cost, they may want to start with a smile.  It can have no cost and actually produce some good results.  It not only helps the one who smiles but can be good for those they come in contact with.

It Can Create More Social Opportunities

There is good evidence that people who smile are able to affect others around them.  Others often see them as more trustworthy.  They also see them as more approachable.  Research indicates men are more likely to approach women who smile than those who make eye contact.  It is no secret that almost everyone enjoys being around someone who smiles.  They also feel that they are more accepting of the inadequacies of others.  A room may seem to brighten when someone enters with a smile on their face.

It Can Make Better Workers

Studies have indicated that people who smile and are happy are able to get more work done in an efficient manner.  The classic scenario of whistling while you work is not just a product of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but is something that can really make a difference.  Those who seem happy may also be able to pass their good moods along to other workers, creating a more productive atmosphere.  It has been shown that people who smile more are considered more often for advancements in their jobs.  Their creative abilities seem to be keener, making them better problem-solvers.

It Can Improve Health

Smiling is more than just an outward expression, it also actually has the ability to affect their health.  It is believed to be able to release endorphins that can kill pain.  It can lower blood pressure and reduce stress.  Many people recognize its effect on the immune system.  A positive attitude is known to help fight some diseases.  One study even found that people who smile more may increase their longevity by as much as seven years.  With all of the pain and stress we have in our lives today, a simple smile may provide some pretty good help.
