Working Shifts, Do You Feel You Never See Daylight?
By Tom Herrin
There are plenty of people who may feel that they never actually see the light of day. This could be due to the fact that they work some kind of shift. Not that it's all bad. Some people really enjoy the benefits they get from doing so, but all that glitters is not gold. The pay and the hours may work well, especially for someone who is single or has a companion who also works shifts. The fact is that working shifts demands at least a little caution as there are some potential hazards to health when people do so. The best approach, as with most things, is to be aware of the downsides and be prepared to deal with them.
Safety May Be Compromised Along With Health
One of the most common obstacles people who work shifts must deal with is lack of good sleep. Even if they have done so for long periods of time, it is often difficult to sleep while others are active. It may result in bits of sleep that are pieced together, thus disrupting the circadian clock that makes them get the most out of sleep. Studies have shown that, as a result of this, shift workers have a higher rate of accidents both on the job and behind the wheel while commuting. Due to poor eating habits, many of them also suffer from things such as diabetes and heart disease at a higher rate.
Identify and React
Taking steps early to intervene can mean a lot. If people will pay special attention to the possibilities of health issues related to their work schedules, they may be able to take action sooner. Making a point to eat better quality meals at regular times may help to provide better nutrition. Avoiding caffeinated drinks once you get through half of the shift may allow you to sleep better after you get off the clock. Finding a way to get some kind of exercise daily can also help you to maintain a more consistent schedule.
Prepare Like It Counts
Taking a shift for granted can be a mistake. You must realize what you are getting into and plan for it. It is important to remember that you are not exactly in line with those who are living a 9 to 5 life. Finding ways to mesh with other family members who are on a more natural routine simply requires a little thinking ahead. Don't let yourself be left out of the activities everyone else is in. At the same time, staying with a program of activity that you can manage will be a real boost.
