Do All You Can: Manage Your Blood Pressure Naturally

By Tom Herrin

For many people, managing their own health becomes a seemingly overwhelming task.  Once they discover they have some kind of issue that needs attention, they are too fast to give up and believe that it is simply fate or genetics.  The facts are very often different.  When they are told they should consider making some lifestyle changes, it goes in one ear and out the other.  They may treat it as if it is just so much talk with no real purpose.  The truth is that, if they follow the advice given to them by a healthcare professional, they may be able to maintain good health without resorting to daily medications.

Get Regular Exercise

The idea of getting exercise to help maintain good health is not a new one.  The key phrase about regular exercise is what people need to pay close attention to.  It does not mean they need to build big muscles or be able to run fast.  It simply means they need to make a point of moving around more with a purpose.  Short but regular walks are good.  Even a regimen of some kind of activity in the morning or at bedtime may do the trick.  Movement may help to increase blood flow and work the heart.  This may help improve blood pressure due to increased elasticity in the blood vessels.

Cut Back on Sodium

Sodium can actually be found in lots of forms, but salt is the most common place people get sodium.  Far too many fast foods or ready-to-eat foods have a high salt content.  This can raise sodium levels to a point that they can cause some serious blood pressure issues as it can cause blood vessels to be more rigid.  Requesting no salt on fries or choosing low-sodium foods can be a big step toward improving blood pressure.  People may see a positive change in as little as a day or two once they make such a commitment.

We Have More Power Than We May Realize

Making good choices is up to each one of us.  It is based on information.  One of the best things to have around the house when it comes to blood pressure is a monitor.  They are pretty inexpensive and easy to use.  We keep one in our home and use it regularly.  When my blood pressure is higher than I feel is good for me, I can make some simple adjustments, and it responds accordingly.  So far, it works well.
