Why a Day Off May Be the Key to Better Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

America is full of overworked people. As a society, we tend to value work over almost everything else. And because of this obsession with all things occupation, we also have a society of people suffering from poor health. Even when we have the days available, many don’t take the time off. Why? If you’re guilty of working your fingers to the bone in order to chase the almighty dollar, take a look at these reasons to take a day for your personal health.

Your Body Needs the Stress Relief

When the body gets too riddled with stress, it can cause a wide array of unwanted side effects. Blemishes on the skin, fatigue, higher risk of heart disease, headaches, pain in the back and neck. Your health is likely to decline in multiple ways. A day off can help ease stress from the body. As the stress is lowered, you may notice relief from pain and tension, a clear mind, and better moods. If you want to keep your health intact long-term, taking appropriate days off is necessary.

Your Mind Needs the Break

Perhaps one of the best reasons to take a day off is for your own mental health. Your mind can only take so much stress and so much worry before negative side effects begin to show up. You may being to have mood swings, feel blue or depressed, have severe anxiety, or experience a number of other problems. Avoid these by simply taking a day without the stress and worry. A day for you -- a day that lets you leave the problems behind and recharge your mind for the better.

It Will Probably Boost Productivity

You might feel as though you shouldn’t take a day off because of your work. While this is a noble thought, it often backfires. Taking time for yourself can actually make you more productive in the long run. After a day off or a short vacation, the mind is clear and ready to focus again. Many people find that some of their best work comes after some time off. If you are feeling a little stifled at work, try taking a day, and you’ll likely see your productivity rise in a big way.

We’re really not meant to work ourselves into the ground. We’re not supposed to be all work and no play. And we’re not supposed to skip our days off in lieu of more work. Take some time for yourself in order to protect your physical and mental well-being. Doing so will improve your quality of life and leave you happier and healthier than ever before.
