How to Start the Day in a Good Mood for Better Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
The manner in which your day begins makes a huge impact on everything else. It's the jumping off point, the thing that sets the mood. Unfortunately, many of us don't really think about this when we open our eyes in the morning. We don't care about setting the tone for the day; we care about more sleep! But the truth is that changing just a few habits first thing in the morning might seriously alter your health, day, and even your life for the better. If you're ready to get this aspect of your life turned around, take a look at these tips to get you started.
Eliminate the Snooze Button
It's really tempting to reach over and slap the snooze button when the alarm goes off, and most of us do it. If you’re among the snooze crowd, it might be a good idea to eliminate this habit. It only prolongs the inevitable … you still have to get up. By avoiding the snooze, you’re more likely to begin your day earlier, less rushed, and with focus and purpose.
Drink a Glass of Water
Most people reach for caffeine in the morning, whether it be coffee, tea, or soda. And truly, it's OK to allow a pick-me-up. But if you can manage it, have a glass of water first. Water stimulates digestion and metabolism, wakes you up, and can even help you focus. Getting hydrated first thing in the morning is a great way to start your day in a healthy manner.
Never Skip Breakfast
Some people just aren't breakfast people. But eating something in the morning is a good idea. Try to make it as healthy as possible. Oatmeal, egg whites, fruit, or wheat toast are all great options. This helps get your diet right and encourages metabolism to get moving.
Turn Off the Electronics
It's really tempting to reach for your phone as soon as you open your eyes. But if there's any way to avoid this habit, skip the electronics and opt for a little peace and quiet instead. There will be plenty of time to text, send emails or get worked up over social media. Allow yourself a few quiet moments in the morning, and your health will really thank you in the end.
The mornings are hard. But honestly, they’re worth fighting for. Use these tips to start your morning off right, and enjoy better physical and mental health for a lifetime.
