Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Liver

By Brandi Swieter

October is Liver Awareness Month. Now is the time to learn how to maintain a healthy liver so it can remain in the best condition possible for as long as possible. This month and every month after, individuals need to do what they can to keep their livers strong and working well.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is necessary to flush out the toxins and keep the liver healthy and working well. It's important that everyone get enough to stay hydrated and well. Eight cups is the typical recommendation, though more may be necessary for those currently feeling unwell or needing a liver detox. A good rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol has a negative effect on the liver. It can cause liver toxicity or worse. Avoiding alcohol whenever possible is best. Those who still want to drink should only do so in moderation, with just a drink or two at a time. Drinking in excess can be extremely dangerous for both mental well-being and overall health.

Enjoy a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet can keep all systems within the body functioning well. To maintain a healthy liver, the right foods are necessary. Consuming foods such as fruits or vegetables on a daily basis will ensure the liver remains in optimal condition. Berries, pears, tea, and cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, are best for this job.

Exercise More

Being overweight can cause excess fat to build up on the liver. Fatty liver disease is possible because of this. Exercise will help to limit this fat buildup and keep the liver as healthy as possible. Regular cardio is necessary to get the blood and oxygen flowing and the heart pumping to burn fat and calories.

Avoid Toxic Chemicals

Certain chemicals and toxins in the air can do damage to the liver and other internal organs. Avoid these toxins where possible. When cleaning, for example, keep the room ventilated so as not to breathe in any of the harsh chemicals found within the sprays. Smoking should also be avoided.

Maintaining a healthy liver is an important part of maintaining overall health. By avoiding alcohol and harmful toxins, drinkings lots of water, enjoying a healthy diet, and exercising, people everywhere will have much healthier livers that function adequately. Even just making improvements in one area can be a huge help toward getting the liver to function healthily once again.
