Reining in Reye's Syndrome Symptoms

By Brandi Goodman

Reye's Syndrome Awareness Month falls to September. This condition tends to affect children who just experienced a viral infection and are now trying to recover. Liver damage, swelling of the brain, and overall confusion can occur with this syndrome, along with other minor symptoms to start. Reining in Reye's syndrome symptoms is possible with the help of a few home remedies, though medical care will be required to fully treat it, especially if more severe reactions have been noticed.

Adequate Hydration

Adequate hydration is necessary when the body is trying to attempt to fight a serious condition such as Reye's. Make sure your son or daughter is getting enough water to drink and keeping their bodies nourished. Vomiting is common with this syndrome, so it may be difficult to keep things down.  Proper hydration is key to recovery though so be sure to push fluids. Have them take small sips at a time so it is easier to hold down.

Stop the Use of Aspirin

Giving a child aspirin during a viral infection has been linked with the cause of Reye's Syndrome. Stop the use of aspirin immediately. It is best to speak with your child's doctor about the best medicines to use. Acetaminophen may be a better choice. Never exceed the amount suggested.

Certain medications from the salicylate family should also be off limits. This may include Pepto-Bismol, which is often given to kids to stop stomach aches. The flu and chickenpox are viral infections that can be made worse with the use of these options.

Keep Them Cool

The internal body temperature of your child may rise to dangerous levels when they have this syndrome. Keep them cool by using cold washcloths and ice packs. Hospitals use cooling blankets for an all-over effect. If you have access to a cooling blanket, that is even better.

Offer Vitamin K

If there is damage to the liver, then abnormal bleeding may be occurring. Vitamin K is used to help with blood clotting. A Vitamin K supplement may be helpful, though foods offer it as well. Green leafy vegetables are one of the best sources, so try to have your child eat some broccoli, spinach, or kale. Certain cereals offer it as well, such as Special K, though it's in lower amounts.

Reye's Syndrome is a serious condition that should not be taken lightly. Though medical treatment is needed, there are some options you can consider at home to help your child with their symptoms. Your child's health, as well as your own, should always be top priority.
