Feeling Tense? 3 Ways to Lower Anxiety

By Genevieve Cunningham

Anxiety is a growing problem in our modern world. Chances are good that you've actually experienced a good bit of anxiety for yourself. Our world just never stops. It's always asking for more -- more money, more time, more work. It's impossible to keep up! And when we can't keep up with life, it's entirely normal to feel anxiety. Unfortunately, anxiety can lead to greater health issues, both mental and physical. It's important to get it under control. But how? If you're interested in letting go of a little tension and anxiety, take a look at these three tips to move you in the right direction starting today.

You Need a Little Nature Time

If you don't spend any time in nature, it's time to start. The greenery, the fresh air, the sun -- all of these things combined can help calm the nerves and lower stress. The key is to do something outdoors that you enjoy. If hiking stresses you out, don't do it. Go outside and go for a simple walk or take a rest in a hammock. Just getting outside a little every day is a great way to manage stress and lower the overall feeling of anxiety that you may feel.

You Probably Need Some Movement

The body doesn't like to handle multiple kinds of stress at one time. So it doesn't. If you're feeling stressed mentally, try stressing your body in another way -- like with exercise. Once you get started, the body will turn off the mental stress in order to deal with the physical demands that you've asked of it. Before you know it, the stress kind of melts away. This is why so many people like to hit it hard at the gym after a hard day. With this approach, you may be able to lower anxiety and improve the shape of your body all at the same time.

Have You Considered Meditation?

Meditation is more than just a passing fad. It's actually an ancient practice, and research suggests that it's incredibly beneficial. Those who meditate regularly are more likely to experience a focused mind and far less daily anxiety and stress. Just don't bite off more than you can chew. Meditation, though it seems easy, can be really difficult. Start slowly, take it one day at a time, and the anxiety relieving benefits will come.

Anxiety can take over your life. It can make even the smallest daily tasks more difficult. Use these tips to get your anxiety under control, and you'll have a happier and healthier life in no time at all.
