Meet The Doctors

Dr. Mike Massengale, D.C. is a Clinic Director, Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Mike Massengale became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2020 when he began serving residents in Asheville, where he also manages the operation at the West Asheville clinic location.

“I love what I do, I love helping people get out of pain,” he says.

Dr. Mike, as his patients call him, is a self-described military brat who moved more than 50 times while growing up, though he spent most of his time in Georgia until he was 14, and then northern Utah.

He and his wife have two daughters and a son. Among the things Dr. Mike enjoys is hiking, camping, being outdoors enjoying nature, and doing remodeling jobs around the house.

He earned his doctorate from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Ore., and earned MBA and MHA degrees from Walden University in MInneapolis. He worked for years in Salt Lake City and was the chiropractor for the Utah Grizzlies hockey team.

Among the patients that Dr. Mike most appreciates are those with headaches: “Most patients that have multiple headaches per week can get relief after just a few chiropractic treatments.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Mike’s is a big fan of The Wheel of Time series of books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

The one thing he always keeps stocked in his refrigerator is pepper jack cheese: “It’s a great snack and can be added to many meals.”

Some of the best advice he could give goes along with the best advice he ever got. “My parents always told me that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to,” he says. “The advice I would give is to enjoy life and don’t wait.”

Dr. Daniel Lenhart, D.C. is a Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Daniel Lenhart joined The Joint Chiropractic in 2024 when he became part of the team at the South Asheville clinic, where he does the rewarding work of helping people as their local healthcare provider.

“Whether it is seeing patients for wellness care or more serious issues, I enjoy helping people improve and maintain their health utilizing the power of their own body,” he says. “My colleagues are another reason I enjoy the field of chiropractic so much. I appreciate the many conversations and the constant learning.”

Dr. Daniel, as his patients call him, grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. “It wasn't until I joined the Army and sustained a back injury while deployed to Iraq that I realized the career path I would pursue,” he says.

He met his wife, Erin, in Hawaii where she attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa. “She is the most amazing mother to our three children,” he says. “The love and support she provides her family is her greatest quality.”

They are the parents of two girls and one boy. “My daughters compete in gymnastics and it was an absolute blessing to keep them adjusted and watch them compete,” he says.

The family has 12 chickens, two blue nose American pitbulls named Ash and Frankie, and a cat named Schucks.

In addition to spending time with his family, when Dr. Daniel isn’t working, he enjoys boating, recreational shooting, and attending his children's sporting events.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Central Michigan University and a Doctorate at Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs.

The most memorable experience he ever had as a chiropractor was giving his son an adjustment just minutes after his birth.

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Daniel always keeps avocados on hand.

If he could plan the ideal dinner party including four famous guests, Dr. Daniel would invite:

  • George Washington - “It would be incredible to sit with the first president and talk about the vision for our wonderful country, including the lessons learned.”
  • Mickey Mantle - “Although I grew up in the South I am a Yankees fan, and most importantly, a Mickey Mantle fan. What an honor it would be to talk about his accomplishments and contributions to the game of baseball.”
  • Carroll Shelby - “Since childhood I have had an appreciation for cars, and I find Ford’s racing history and accomplishments fascinating. With the contributions of designer and race car driver Carroll Shelby and the influence he had on Ford’s racing history, I can't think of a better person to chat with about the subject.”
  • Neil Armstrong - “I remember growing up in Florida watching the space shuttle launches from my house and I have a fascination with everything space related. What an honor it would be to chat with a man who’s been to the moon and listen to the stories he tells.”

The most memorable experience of Dr. Daniel’s life was the birth of his children. “It was at those moments that I realized my potential for love,” he says. His favorite book is Founding Fathers.

If Dr. Daniel wrote an autobiography, it would be entitled A Curvy Road. The best advice he’s ever received is attributed to Thomas Jefferson: “Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.”

The best advice he could give others is: “Life is short and tomorrow is not guaranteed. Throw caution to the wind and chase your dreams!”

Dr. Jay Clark, D.C. is a Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Jay Clark joined The Joint Chiropractic in 2024 when he became part of the team at the North Asheville clinic, where he does the rewarding work of helping people as their local healthcare provider.

“I love that chiropractic lets me meet new people on a regular basis,” he says. “I learn so much about the area and the cool folks we work with. Chiropractic lets me help people get back to doing the things they love to do. Over the years I have enjoyed the wonderful healing that chiropractic does for people.”

Dr. Jay, as his patients call him, moved a lot as a child and lived in different places.

His wife, Nicole, has an eye for design. “She is a wonderful person who loves to decorate for each and every holiday,” he says.

The couple has three sons and they have a big, orange tabby cat named Kitty Bitty. In his free time Dr. Jay enjoys falconry and woodworking.

Dr. Jay earned a Doctorate of Chiropractic at Parker University in Dallas, Texas.

“I was hurt at work and a chiropractor fixed me up,” he says. “We became friends and he pushed me to go to chiropractic school.”

His favorite aspects of the chiropractic field is witnessing the effectiveness of adjustments and the beauty of working as a team. “I like working with other doctors because sometimes in chiropractic it can be fairly lonely practicing alone,” he says. “I have seen so many things improve following an adjustment.”

In case you didn’t know

He always keeps bananas on hand. “They are a great snack or on-the-go meal and they are wonderful for you,” he says.

If he could put together the ideal dinner party, Dr. Jay would invite four of the framers of the Constitution. “I would love to know what the conversation would be like,” he says.

He has the distinction of having served with the United States Navy Seabees. “As a member of such a small unit, it completely changed my outlook on what I was capable of in life,” he says.

His favorite book is The Shallows by Nicholas Carr. “It gave me an understanding of the importance of maintaining focus and where you place your attention,” he says.

The best advice he’s ever received is: “You are what you eat.” Dr. Jays says, “It showed me just how important nutrition is to your health.”

His best advice to others is: “Carefully consider the food you put in your mouth; eating bad food damages the body more than we know.”

Dr. Zach Beckner, D.C. is a Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Zachary Beckner became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2024, serving residents at the Asheville North clinic, doing the work he finds so rewarding.

“The best thing about being a chiropractor is the ability to help people live healthier, happier, and pain-free lives,” he says. “I enjoy the process of creating a community of people and offering natural ways of healing.”

Dr. Zach, as his patients call him, grew up in Murphy, N.C. and previously worked in Blue Ridge, Ga. His wife, Marielis, is also a chiropractor. The couple has a rescue dog named Mando.

When he’s not working, Dr. Zach enjoys hiking, camping, and playing basketball.

He attended Life University in Marietta, Ga., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a Doctorate of Chiropractic. Dr. Zach specialized in the study of strength and conditioning.

“I was doing a research project in fifth grade and the teacher put a number of careers in a hat, and I pulled out ‘chiropractic,’” he says. “After doing the research project on the career, I loved everything about it and the rest is history.”

Dr. Zach’s most memorable experiences as a chiropractor involve his work with pediatric patients. “It’s always amazing to see when a baby is coming in with a lot of issues such as torticollis, acid reflux, ear infections, difficulty feeding, and constipation,” he says. “After very gentle adjustments they start to function better.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

“I always have a secret stash of ice cream in case I get a sweet tooth,” he says.

If he could host a dinner party including four famous guests, Dr. Zach would invite Theodore Roosevelt, because “he is the reason we have national parks,” he says. He would also include actor Woody Harrelson, as well as the founder of chiropractic, DD Palmer, and his son, BJ Palmer.

Dr. Zach had a profound experience during chiropractic school when he herniated a disc in his low back. “Coming back from that injury is hard to do, but after all is said and done, I can relate to what my patients are going through and it enables me to better help them,” he says.

The Alchemist is a book that’s had a lasting impact on Dr. Zach.

Some of the best advice he’s ever received is: “Keep it simple, stupid.”

If he was asked for advice, Dr. Zach would offer: “Don’t keep doing the same thing over and expect a different outcome.”
