Meet The Doctors

Dr. Christopher Gardner, D.C. is a Clinic Director, Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Chris Gardner came to the South Asheville clinic location of The Joint Chiropractic team in 2022, where he enjoys the role of local healthcare provider and clinic director for the community.

“The best part of being able to serve the community through chiropractic is being able to restore my patients’ ability to do the things that they love to do without the use of invasive treatments and recovery times,” he says. “The second-best thing about being in chiropractic is to be able to advocate for the body’s natural ability to self-maintain, self-regulate, and self-heal. This allows me to be an advocate for preventative wellness or maintenance care.”

Dr. Chris, as patients know him, grew up in Bishopville, S.C., and worked previously in Florence. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, and loves the outdoors and traveling.

He earned his doctorate from Sherman College of Chiropractic after getting a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Coker University in Hartsville, S.C.

“I knew chiropractic was my calling the moment that I was six months post-cervical spine injury with pain and went to a chiropractor for relief,” he says. “As a chiropractor, I have witnessed many times that people are relieved of pains and discomfort, but by far, the coolest thing is when a mom comes in with a breech baby and by adjusting only their spine, the baby returns to optimal position for delivery.”

In Case You Missed It

Dr. Chris likes serving people, and says “the coolest thing I’ve ever done was go to China to serve the underserved communities with chiropractic care.”

Among the most influential books the doctor has read is The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. “I read this book many years ago when I was first starting chiropractic college,” Dr. Chris says. “This book helped me focus my thoughts and have the mindset to set and achieve my goals.”

The one thing he always keeps stocked in his refrigerator is sparkling water.

Dr. Shane Kamer, D.C. is a Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Shane Kamer became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2020 when he began serving residents in the Asheville area, where he continues doing the work he finds so gratifying.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is that I get to help others,” he says. “It’s rewarding to help people become pain-free in a completely holistic way without needing medication.”

Dr. Shane is a product of eastern Kentucky. He worked previously in Ashland, Ky., and Black Mountain.

He enjoys spending time with his wife, who is a teacher and coaches volleyball, and loves watching his daughter play sports. IN his spare time, he likes creating cosplay costumes for his daughter. “They’re a hit every year at Halloween,” he says.

The family also includes three Belgian malinois dogs named Ginger, Chachi, and Gunner. They have their own history: they were used in the military to clear bombs from bodies.

He earned his doctorate from Logan University after getting a bachelor’s degree in natural science from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio..

“I wanted to do something in the medical field that worked with the musculoskeletal system,” Dr. Shane says. “I could not have found a better fit.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Shane says that if he could sit down to dinner with any four people from history, he would like to break bread with Jesus Christ, Albert Einstein, Anne Frank, and Elon Musk.

A book that has been really important to Dr. Shane is The Subtle Art of Not Giving a #@%! By Mark Manson. “The premise of the book is to look to the things that really matter in life and work on that,” he says. “That means sometimes taking a hard look inside to see what trivial things we care about and what mistakes we have made that must be changed. Personal accountability for one’s own life is paramount.”

The one thing that Dr. Shane always has at home, he says, “is good bourbon to relax after a long day.”

Dr. Cody Somerville, D.C. is a Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Cody Somerville began his journey as a local healthcare provider at The Joint Chiropractic in 2023 when he joined the clinic location in West Asheville to continue doing the work he finds so rewarding.

His favorite part of working as a chiropractor is “being able to help patients get pain relief without drugs,” he says, “and having the ability to heal patients with just my hands.”

Dr. S., as his patients call him, grew up in Parkersburg, W. Va. where he spent his time working on a farm and playing football with friends. “With all of these activities my body was regularly in pain, especially my low back,” he says. “It was in high school when I first went to the chiropractor and found out that I no longer needed to take four ibuprofen just so I could perform in sports and at work. This led me to decide that I wanted to be a chiropractor.”

Before moving to Asheville, Dr. S. worked in Port Orange, Fla., Denver, and Glenwood Springs, Colo.

His wife, Karley, enjoys the outdoors, whether it’s hiking, camping, or paddleboarding. In his free time, Dr. S. enjoys staying healthy through cardio and resistance training during the week, while keeping his body moving nearly every weekend with hiking, paddleboarding, fishing, or hunting. “Any type of exploration and adventure is always welcomed, especially new experiences,” he says.

Dr. S. studied anatomy at Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va., where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He received a Doctorate at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Fla.

“I have had great success treating and relieving headaches through chiropractic adjustments,” he says. “I am excited to work at this clinic due to its connection with the surrounding area and being able to help like-minded people.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

He says he keeps extra virgin olive oil on hand “because of its amazing anti-inflammatory properties and its use in everyday cooking scenarios.”

If he could plan the ideal dinner party including four famous guests, Dr. S. would invite Leonardo Da Vinci, Nikola Tesla, Galileo, and Louis Pasteur. “I would love to understand how their minds worked to be such great inventors,” he says.

One of the coolest experiences he’s ever had was moving to a small town in Colorado. “I lived there for three years and over that time I learned a lot about the area, the people there, and about myself,” he says. “Although I was far from home, it gave me a better understanding of how to be a better person to my family. The distance made my heart grow more fond of them, which is largely why my wife and I have moved back to the East Coast to be near members of the family.”

One of Dr. S.’s favorite books is Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life … and Maybe the World. “Learning to develop simple daily habits gives you the assurance that everything you do matters,” he says.

If he wrote an autobiography, Dr. S. would entitle it Exquisite Adventures.

His grandmother gave him advice he treasures including, “Always water your plants, both physically and metaphorically.”

If he was giving advice, Dr. S. would recommend to people that they “always look forward in life. If you are constantly looking behind you, then you are likely to trip and fall.”

Dr. Kirsten West, D.C. is a Chiropractor at South Asheville

Dr. Kirsten West joined The Joint Chiropractic in 2021 when she became part of the team at the South Asheville clinic, where she does the rewarding work of helping people as their local healthcare provider.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is helping people improve their quality of life naturally,” she says. “It’s gratifying to see people get hope that they can feel better.” Raised in the foothills around Wilkesboro, Dr. West grew up around “people who had no idea natural healthcare options were available.”

She earned her doctorate from Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Mo., after getting a bachelor of science degree at North Carolina State. She worked previously in Winston-Salem, and Greenville, S.C.

In her spare time, Dr. West enjoys hiking, kayaking, and visiting breweries, and spending time with her Labrador mix, Chance..

She knew chiropractic was her calling when, as an athlete, chiropractors helped her heal from multiple injuries. It was further validated as a professional when she helped patients with ear infections simply by using the chiropractic adjustment. “Kids not having to get tubes in their ears is an awesome feeling,” she says.

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. West says her perfect dinner party would include singer Prince, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, and entertainers Betty White and Ellen DeGeneres.

She is a big fan of author Brene Brown: “She’s a great motivational writer and speaker.”

The one thing that Dr. West always keeps stocked in her refrigerator is hot sauce. “Breakfast,” she says, “is so much better with it.”
