4 Solutions to Make Living With Scoliosis Manageable

By Brandi Goodman

Scoliosis Awareness Month in June encourages people to learn more about this sideways curvature and how it affects those who have it. It may seem minor, but scoliosis can lead to severe pain because of an uneven waist and posture. You may even experience regular muscle spasms. With these four solutions to make living with scoliosis manageable, anyone who suffers can reduce their symptoms.

Wear a Back Brace

A special back brace can be worn regularly to prevent the curvature caused by scoliosis from causing pain. The brace helps to keep the back straight so you don't find yourself bent toward one side and feeling uncomfortable. You can choose to wear a brace throughout the entire day or only for a few hours while you participate in certain activities or even run errands. If your scoliosis is severe, your doctor may have a recommended brace to use for certain hours of the day so there will be no choice in the matter.

Strengthen Your Core

Because your posture tends to be off when you have scoliosis, it is important to strengthen your core. Working out your abs and keeping your midsection strong will also keep your back strong. It will be easier to remain upright and maintain balance when your body is strong and capable. Ab and back exercises are ideal to do regularly.

Improve Your Eating Habits

Poor eating habits can play a role in the progression of scoliosis. It's important to improve your eating habits so the foods you consume help and do not harm your body further. Drinking lots of water is especially beneficial. The muscles, joints, tendons, and other components within the body need water to work. They will be more flexible and less prone to injury if they are hydrated well. You should also be sure to consume plenty of fruits and vegetables packed with vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants.

Join a Support Group

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Find a scoliosis support group in your area and get together with others who have this issue. It often helps to talk to others who understand. They may have some helpful tips and ideas for how to cope, and you may even find some new lifelong friends in the process.

Consider these solutions if you're hoping to make your scoliosis diagnosis easier to manage. With a little help, you can continue to lead a normal life with as little pain as possible.
