How Inactivity Leads to Pain and Problems

There's no harm in vegging out in front of the TV for a few hours. Right? Wrong! Inactivity for hours can quickly lead to pain and problems. This is especially true if you make the practice a habit. You need to remain as active as possible to prevent certain aches and ailments from setting in.

Disuse Syndrome

Disuse syndrome is a very real thing. Fail to use a certain muscle or joint within your body and it will start to weaken. Eventually, it will become unusable at all. This is commonly seen in those who are bedridden. Although, the very sedentary world we live in today with everyone sitting down to look at their phone screens and video games has also led to this immobility. 

Joint Stiffness

Even if inactivity for a few hours doesn't immediately render you useless, it can make your joints stiff and sore. Whether you're sitting or standing, being in one position for an extended interval can cause your muscles and joints to stiffen up and become painful to move. You should be stretching regularly at the very least to ensure this doesn't happen. Stretching can help your joints remain flexible and free from aches.

Poor Sleep

If you've been inactive all day and now find it's time to rest think again. Your body and mind may both protest the act. You could find yourself feeling as though you need to get up and move and do something different instead of continuing to lay there. Exercise is beneficial for sleep. It can exhaust your energy and make it easier to drift off at night. Be sure you're getting at least 30 minutes of good exercise during the daylight hours so you can get better sleep at night.

Weight Gain

If you aren't moving, you aren't burning calories. All of the foods you eat will quickly cause you to put on weight if you never burn any of the energy off that it provides. Make sure you're staying active and working out when you can each day to maintain your weight and your health.

Inactivity can lead to pain and problems if you aren't careful. Your body is already inactive for eight hours each night. You don't want to spend your day stuck in one position, too. Do what you can to remain active and moving. Sure, sit and watch TV for a while -- but get up and grab a healthy snack during a commercial or stand and stretch while you do your viewing. Your body will thank you.
