Celebrate These April Observances in Healthy Ways
By Brandi Goodman
Maintaining healthy habits should always be the goal no matter what you're celebrating. People tend to forgo their regular health stance in order to indulge in the unhealthy practices set forth during many holidays and observances held each month. Whether you're celebrating candy-centered holidays such as Easter or actually trying to enjoy a beneficial occasion such as Earth Day, healthy practices should always be at the center.
Easter
Getting outside and having an egg hunt is actually a great practice to maintain each Easter. The ones hiding the eggs high and low will get some exercise and those hunting will as well. Just be sure you aren't filling the eggs with nothing but candy and giving your kids baskets filled with goodies, too. Find some alternative solutions, such as nuts, jerky, and even tiny toys. It will be a healthier holiday if you skip all the candy and sugar-filled snacks.
Earth Day
Earth Day is already a pretty healthy occasion to observe. The 22nd of April sees a celebration of the earth and all the things it provides to us. Commemorate the occasion by picking up trash around your favorite park, planting something in your garden, or buying produce from a local farmers market. All of these are beneficial to the earth and for your health.
National Garden Month
National Garden Month fits well for April. It's really the main start of the spring season, after all. Gardening is a great activity to enjoy that benefits your health in numerous ways. Get outdoors and plant something or simply tend to the garden or flower bed you already have. The activity is great for both physical and mental well-being.
Stress Awareness Month
Stress awareness is also a good fit for April. Spring cleaning, yard work, and the change that comes with the season can all put a lot of stress on your life. Find healthy ways to relieve yourself of the tension you're feeling this month that you can use every month thereafter. Spending time laughing, writing in a journal, taking up a new creative project, or listening to upbeat tunes can each help lower your stress levels.
No matter the occasion, it's always best to find healthy ways to celebrate. Your health and well-being should always be the priority no matter what type of holiday or other observance comes up.
