Watch Out! These Exercises Can Hurt Your Back

By Genevieve Cunningham

Exercise is one of the best things that we can do for our health, body, and self-confidence. You won't find fitness advice that doesn't include regular exercise as a major component. But even with all of the good that comes from exercise, there might be some things to watch out for too. Like pain! Along with a little soreness and stiff muscles, exercise can cause a bit of discomfort in our bodies. Luckily, we can minimize the discomfort with just a few tips. If you're ready to get serious about exercise and better health, take a look at these exercises that might cause pain, plus some tips for keeping your body feeling its best.

Squats

Squats aren't supposed to hurt your back, but if you're not careful, they will. Why? Usually, pain from squats happens for two reasons: improper form or too much weight. When you do a squat you should keep proper form at the forefront of your mind. Bending too far forward will put strain on your lower back, which will eventually manifest as pain or injury. The same result can happen when adding too much weight too quickly to a weighted squat. Moral of the story: Slow, steady, form-focused will get you the results you want without the pain.

Running

Running is a really great exercise, but it's also really hard on your body. Along with the back, the joints can also experience pain from running. To ease the pain, make sure you're stretching really good before and after, using braces or supportive devices if needed, and wearing shoes that are comfortable and solid. Running can hurt, but preparing your body can help take the sting out of the workout.

Don't Stop Moving

If exercise causes pain, why do it? Because our bodies need it! Don't let a little discomfort become an excuse. We need movement every single day. Prepare your body, get the support you need, or switch workouts if you need to. But don't stop moving, or you'll invite a new kind of pain -- and poor health too -- into your life.

Add Chiropractic Care

Another great way to ease back pain after a workout, or anytime at all, is through chiropractic care. Chiropractors use a very gentle procedure to remove joint restrictions from the body. When this happens, tension is alleviated and pain is reduced. It's incredibly effective for people of all ages, and when used consistently, it can help make your workout more enjoyable. If you're fighting back pain, consider adding chiropractic care to your life from here on out.
