3 Tips for Staying Healthy in Winter

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's winter. It's cold, wet, breezy, and sometimes miserable. The trouble with winter is not that you have to wear a coat or that you have to turn on the heater. It's that the cool winds often bring sickness with them as well. If you tend to have trouble staying healthy this time of year, take a look at these tips that can help you keep your strength through the season.

Cover Your Head, Hands, and Feet

How many people get ill at this time of year because they lose so much heat? And where do we lose much of the heat from our body? From our head, our hands, and our feet. To keep yourself from losing this heat, just cover them up. Make sure that you constantly have a hat, some gloves, and some warm shoes and socks available. The warmer you keep these areas of your body, the less heat escapes, and the healthier you should be able to keep yourself through the season.

Get Some Sun

It's sometimes difficult to get enough sun in the winter. The sun is farther away, and it's cold. So of course, we don't really like to go outside very often. But this is a time of year when it is incredibly important to get enough sun. The sun gives us the very important Vitamin D, which helps fight off depression as well as deep aches in the bones. Even a few minutes a day is enough to help you stay healthy through the winter. Get outside, soak in some sun, and you will feel much better through the next few months.

Keep the Immune System Strong

Since we already know that this is a time of year full of sickness, it's very important to keep the immune system strong. How can you do this? Make sure that you are either eating plenty of Vitamin C or that you are taking a supplement. This vitamin strengthens the immune system and enables it to fight off foreign invaders. It can also be beneficial to exercise, get enough rest, keep yourself warm, and wipe down potential germs from your home and body. Keeping the immune system strong will help you fight off any sickness before it enters your body and takes over.

Sometimes it really does feel impossible to stay well in the winter. But it's really not. It just takes a little bit of preparation and some dedication. Use these tips to keep your body healthy and strong so that you can enjoy the winter and all of the fun that comes with it.
