3 Ways to Significantly Improve Your Sleep

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most people would agree that a good night's sleep is one of the best things to have in life. As we get older and take on adult responsibilities and worries, sleep often suffers in a big way. We either can't fall asleep at all, or we can't stay asleep, tossing and turning all night long. It's miserable! But luckily, it's not a guarantee. Poor, inadequate sleep is something we can beat -- as long as we have the knowledge to move in the right direction. If you're ready to improve your sleep, take a look at these three tips that may work right away.

Focus on Healthy Routines

Healthy routines are key to many aspects of our health, sleep included. When we have routines, our bodies and minds know exactly what to expect. They become accustomed to the routine, and as we go through the motions, they begin to wind down and prepare for sleep. The problem that most people run into is that creating a routine and sticking with it takes work. Once it's done, it's easy to follow. But be patient in the creation process. The long-term effects on your sleep will be worth the efforts you give in the beginning.

Make Sure You're Moving

So many people are guilty of staying sedentary throughout the day. It's too easy to sit still -- whether on the couch, in front of the TV, or with a device in hand. But this lack of movement will absolutely contribute to trouble sleeping. Your body won't burn enough energy to feel the need for sleep. If you want to turn this around, you have to get up and get moving, preferably early in the day. Start with gentle walking, add exercise as you're ready, and sleep may find its way into your routine without any additional measures.

Ask for Some Help

You should never be ashamed or afraid to ask for help for a health issue, no matter what the issue entails. If you're having trouble sleeping and nothing is working, ask your doctor. They may be able to give you vitamins, medication, or lifestyle tips that move you in the right direction. Professionals are there for a reason -- to help! Ask your doctor for guidance and get your sleep back as soon as possible.

If you're not getting enough sleep, there's no doubt that your life is suffering. We need sleep to feel our best and perform at our best. Use these tips to improve your sleep, and feel better in your daily life starting today.
