Want a Free Workout? Head Outdoors!
By Donna Stark
There must be some truth to the saying that the best things in life are free. After all, one only needs to head to their local big box warehouse store on the weekends and look for the crowds because, more than likely, those crowds are converging around the free samples. It seems to me that everybody loves the word free. We see and hear it all the time. Free samples. Kids eat free. Buy one, get one free. But do you know what the best free thing in life is? How about better health and fitness? That's right, and all you need to do is head outdoors for the free workout that Mother Nature has to offer.
While there is much to be said for your local gym filled with all kinds of equipment, trainers, and amenities, there are also so many benefits for the "other" kind of gym ... the outdoors. Let's take a look at a few of them.
- Natural obstacles - While it may not have an instant hill the second you want it or wooden boxes to jump on, the great outdoors does have its very own, unique obstacles. Take advantage of the different terrains, the hills, and the elements of weather. You may find yourself working out even harder than you do while in the gym.
- Fresher air - As simple as it may sound, fresh air has plenty of positive effects. Indoor air can oftentimes be more polluted than the air outdoors, and breathing in fresh air is so good for clearing your mind and boosting your oxygen levels. You can also smell the natural scents of nature -- and who doesn't love the smell of freshly-cut grass, the beach, or pine needles?
- Reduced stress - Reconnecting with nature has been linked to decreased levels of stress and anxiety. It can also help to lower blood pressure, increase clarity, and positively affect a person's mental health.
- Improved health - Looking to improve your health and boost your immunity? Exercising outdoors may be your answer! In addition to increased immune function, you will also get a free (there's that word again) daily dose of Vitamin D. And isn't it more fun to get your Vitamin D while outside than choking down a pill every morning in your kitchen?
Get Up and Go!
There is no debating the benefits of physical fitness. Staying in shape and exercising regularly can help reduce the risk of serious health issues and chronic illness. It can improve nearly every aspect of your overall health and wellness, and doing it outdoors is just as effective as working out in your local gym. In fact, it can actually be more fun! So go ahead. Grab your outdoor gear and get moving! And remember, it won't cost you a single penny!
