Healthy Snack Options That Satisfy Kids

By Genevieve Cunningham

Oh, the joy of getting kids to eat healthy. Actually, if you’re a parent or guardian of a child, you know that it’s not a joy at all. It’s a pain … and a big one. Kids like sugar and candy and chocolate and all things unhealthy. And if they don’t get what they want, they’ll whine like there’s no tomorrow. Luckily, getting your kids to eat healthy doesn’t have to be as complicated as you think. Take a look at these healthy snack options that will have kids eating healthy without even knowing it.

Strawberries and Whipped Cream

You may think of Cool Whip as an unhealthy option, but it’s not nearly as bad as you think. Sure, you don’t want to eat it at every meal, but as a quick snack for kids, it’s the perfect compromise. This will give kids a dose of an ice cream-esque food, but without the tons of calories or massive amounts of sugar. Use it as a dipping sauce for strawberries (or blueberries or raspberries, etc.), and you have a nutrient-packed, sweet treat that satisfies everyone’s taste buds.

Apple Sandwiches

This might sound complicated, but it’s actually incredibly easy. Start with an apple, and take out the core. You’ll be left with an apple with a hole in the middle. Then slice the apple so that you have apple rings, much akin to pineapple rings in appearance. Use two slices as your “bread,” and put some peanut butter in the middle. For an added crunch, you can also add raisins to the mix. This is a low calorie, nutrient dense, and super fun treat for kids to enjoy every day.

Rice Cake Pizza

Not many kids (or adults) like rice cakes. They’re lacking in flavor and feel a little like taking a bite out of cardboard. But you can jazz these up to create a delicious snack. Start with a rice cake and spread either peanut butter or a basic yogurt spread on top. Then top it with your favorite fruits … apples, berries, maybe even a little granola. Your kids can even participate, which makes this snack double the fun.

Getting your kids to eat healthy is a chore, there’s no doubt about it. But it’s possible if you’re willing to be both patient and creative. Use these tips as a guide, and get your entire family on track for a better diet and better health all year long.
