Dr. Amber Smith joined the team of local healthcare providers at the Greenwood, Aiken, and North Augusta clinics of The Joint Chiropractic in 2022 to do the work she finds so rewarding.
“The best thing about chiropractic is helping people reach their optimum health. I love making people feel good,” she says. “The second best thing I would say is not prescribing medication. Sometimes medication masks the pain, but with chiropractic we really get down to the root of the pain to find what’s causing it.”
A native of Augusta, Ga., Dr. Smith previously worked in Marietta. “Being raised in Augusta shaped me to become a hard-working woman and to never settle.”
In her spare time, she loves to listen to live music and spend time with her family and friends.
Dr. Smith went to Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., where she earned a bachelor of science in biology. She earned a Doctorate of Chiropractic at Life University in Marietta, Ga.
She was called to a career in chiropractic care after seeing her mother’s successful treatment following a serious car accident. “I would accompany her to her visits to the chiropractor and was able to witness her transition over time, both physically and emotionally,” she says. “I knew that was something I really wanted to do. I wanted to make people feel good just like that.”
One of Dr. Smith’s most meaningful experiences as a chiropractor occurred during her internship. “I had a patient who had to use a walker when he started care,” she says. “After three months of treatment the patient was able to walk without assistance.”
She is particularly pleased that The Joint has a walk-in policy. “I love how patients don’t have to worry about appointments. They can just walk in and get adjusted.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
If she had the opportunity to design the perfect dinner party, including four famous guests, Dr. Smith would invite: Martin Luther King Jr.; Harriet Tubman; the first chiropractic patient, William Harvey Lillard; and Michael Jackson. “I look up to all four of these people,” she says. “They were all leaders and movers-and-shakers in the world. Without these four people I would definitely not be a chiropractor. I would love to ask them how I could be a great leader and how I could spread the message of chiropractic care to the world.”
The most memorable moment for Dr. Smith was graduating from chiropractic school. “It made me really believe I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it.”
Her favorite book is Becoming by Michelle Obama. “It was so inspiring. It taught me to always believe in myself.”
The best title for an autobiography of Dr. Smith’s life would be Living in Your Purpose. “I believe with chiropractic I am definitely serving my purpose.”
She was taught by her favorite science teacher to “reach for the stars.”
