How to Find That Workout Motivation Again

By Genevieve Cunningham

Finding the workout motivation can be difficult. Many people believe that once you find it, it’s yours for the keeping. But exercise motivation is like anything else; it ebbs and flows constantly. One of the most frustrating things about it is losing it. It can be such a challenge to discover that willpower and motivation all over again. But it can be done! Take a look at these tips for finding motivation that you thought was lost for good.

Don’t Think About the Past

So what if you used to be 20 pounds lighter? So what if you could run a mile in seven minutes and now it takes you over nine? While it’s great to have goals, it doesn’t generally help to dwell over the past. Instead, focus on your future. Work toward your ideal weight, but don’t worry that you’re not quite there yet. Instead, worry about losing just one pound this week. Work toward getting your mile time down, but don’t stress that it’s not where it used to be. Focus on improving it by 10 seconds this week. While it might be frustrating that you used to be in a healthier state, if you want to improve your overall health, it’s best to focus on the here and now.

Find Brand New Goals and Timelines

Any time that you’re looking to motivate yourself all over again, it’s best to get brand new goals. Maybe an old goal was to hit a certain number on the scale. That’s a great goal. But maybe your new goal is to simply feel better in your own skin. That’s a great goal, too. Find new things to work for, things that are relevant in your life right now. Making new goals and new things to strive for helps to refocus your energy and move you in the right direction.

Be Open to New Workouts

Working out can be tough, but it’s even tougher if it’s boring. Don’t allow your exercise program to get boring. Instead, be open to new workouts. Tired of running? Try something like yoga or pilates … something that’s drastically different from the norm. Being open to experiencing something new can make it fun and exciting again, which is one huge hurdle in the quest for motivation.

Starting a workout program or a healthy eating plan all over again can be discouraging. You already know what it takes, but your mind just isn’t ready to commit. Use these tips to find your motivation and get back on track to the healthy life that you deserve.
