3 Reasons to Make Time for Winding Down at Night

By Genevieve Cunningham

We're a tired society. We're really busy, and the busyness problem only seems to be getting worse. And because we're constantly on the go, there are many nights when we simply pour ourselves into bed. It's really no wonder that we suffer so much anxiety as a society. We're stressed, exhausted, and overwhelmed. It's a rampant problem, and correcting the problem could completely change your health and your life. So how do we change our habits? And what should we do instead of pouring ourselves under the covers? We should take the time to wind down. If you're not taking the time to wind down before sleep, take a look at these reasons to make it a priority now.

It Lowers Stress

Stress is not going anywhere anytime soon. We all suffer from stress, and it hits us from all different angles. When we have too much stress, it can cause harm to our health. High blood pressure, heart disease, insomnia, and weight gain can all come about or the risk heightened as the result of excessive stress. Winding down at night gives you the chance to lower stress before you sleep. Winding down involves things that you enjoy -- reading a book, stretching, or drinking hot tea. As your body gets used to letting go of that stress every day, you might find that it remains lower on a more consistent basis.

It Helps You Sleep

Lowering stress helps you sleep. Having a routine helps you sleep. Doing things you enjoy before bedtime helps you sleep. Do you see a pattern here? Winding down at night might help you sleep! It calms the nerves, creates a peaceful feeling, and helps you get more rest. And considering most people in the country are suffering from a lack of sleep, this is a benefit that you really need in your life.

It Feels Good

You may find that the winding down process -- whatever that looks like for you -- simply feels really good. You may start to really look forward to this part of the day. You might find that winding down makes your day feel more complete. And the truth is that you deserve to feel good. You work hard, take care of others, and trudge along through the mundane parts of life. Why not make some time for something that makes you feel good at the day's end?

If you're not currently taking the time to wind down, it's time to start. It's time to create a routine. Find some things that feel good and calm your nerves, and try them out. As you find what works for you, you can create a solid routine that allows you to end your day on a good note every single night from here on out.
