4 Ways to Prevent School Pain

By Brandi Goodman

School can bring a lot of pain if students aren't careful. From carrying heavy backpacks to sitting down at desks for hours, many things at school can cause tension in the shoulders and back. Finding ways to prevent school pain will help to make the day more stress-free and productive.

Stretch as Often as Possible

Even while sitting at a desk, you can stretch out so that your back and legs do not become stiff and sore. Lean back in the seat to stretch out the back. Raise the legs and squeeze the legs to stretch out the lower body. You should also stretch during breaks and between classes. Stand up on your tip toes and reach for the sky. Bend over and touch the toes. Grab an ankle and bend the leg back for a quad stretch. All of these movements will help to keep the joints flexible and prevent tension.

Keep Your Bag Light

It is not ideal to pack your backpack full. A heavy bag can cause you to lean forward, harming the neck and shoulders. It may also cause uneven distribution, particularly if you're using only one strap. This will make you lean more to one side and hurt your shoulder or back. Keep your bag light and be sure to wear both shoulder straps over your body so the weight is placed evenly.

Drink Lots of Water

Water helps the joints remain flexible and strong. If you want to prevent fatigue, then drinking lots of water throughout the day is ideal. Make sure you keep a water bottle with you at all times so you can take a drink as needed, as long as it's allowed. Otherwise, get a big drink from the fountain between every class and at lunch time.

Choose Appropriate Footwear

It may seem appealing to wear sandals or high heels to school, but this practice should be avoided. You want to choose appropriate footwear so all of the walking you do from one end of the building to the next does not cause harm to your body. You'll be in your shoes all day, so a pair of comfortable and sturdy shoes are best for this. It's important to purchase a new pair each year that fits well.

Remaining free from pain and tension at school is a great way to ensure a better and more productive day. Students who feel fatigued and sore are less likely to pay attention in class and do their best on their work. Use these methods for preventing school pain and make your class time more worthwhile.
