Make Your Old Workout New Again
By Sara Butler
When you first start a new workout routine, it’s easy to be motivated. Then, as the days wear on the workout becomes less and less exciting. Letting your workout routine get boring is one of the reasons people tend to drift away from it and perhaps stop doing it altogether. Luckily, there are a few strategies you can use to make your old workout new again and help it from becoming stale. Maintain your health and meet your fitness goals by changing things up, just a little.
Shake Up the Order
Simply changing the order of the exercises, you can help to keep yourself engaged as you work to improve your fitness level. Following a fitness routine that is identical each day causes your body to become accustomed to it. This may cause your fitness goals to plateau and you’ll likely start to become bored in the process. Challenge your muscles and your mind by changing the order in which you perform exercises at the gym and once in a while try something new!
Join a Group
If you normally exercise solo, then join a group exercise class. If you normally exercise with a group, then consider going solo. This small change can help you to stay motivated and give you a sense of accomplishment you may not have had before.
Go Inside (or Out)
Something as simple as a change in your surroundings can be the breath of fresh air you need in order to become motivated again. If you like to workout inside, then think about going outside for some more visual stimulation. This can often make the workout seem less tedious. If you normally love the outdoors, then think about moving in to help give your mental stamina a boost.
Listen to New Music
There’s a ton of research out there about the ways in which music can influence a workout. It can help give you the strength to push on, even help you push through some physical discomfort as you push your body just a little harder. Make sure to experiment with different types of music to see which one does it for you. You could even try a podcast as a distraction from the fatigue or muscle burn that accompanies many exercises.
There's no harm in having a favorite exercise, simply remember to make it exciting by periodically switching things up.
