Meet The Doctors

Dr. Lisa Isphording -- it’s pronounced “IS-ford-ing,” but you can call her Dr. Lisa -- joined the family of local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic in 2017. She received her bachelor of science in liberal arts from Regents College of the State of New York, and in the same year received her doctorate from Life College.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is seeing miracles happen every day,” Dr. Lisa says. “I also love watching patients transform from a drug-based ideology to a health-based preventive mentality.”

Although born in South Carolina, Dr. Lisa spent much of her childhood in southwest Wyoming. Professionally, in addition to working in Columbia and Aiken, she has worked in Atlanta, Cleveland, and Toledo; she has also worked in Lima and Huacho, Peru!

“My fiance Sergio is from Peru,” Dr. Lisa says. “We met at an Abraham Hicks Law of Attraction meeting 10 years ago in Orlando and have traveled the world together. He’s a teacher of science by profession, and also an artist.

“Traveling is my passion. I will go anywhere at any time and love the experience of seeing how other people in the world live.”

Dr. Lisa’s other hobbies are a bit more domestic. “When home, I love to do jigsaw puzzles and cook,” she says.

She also has an adult son who works for a railroad; because he lives in Charlotte, Dr. Lisa is in a perpetual state of dog-sitting of his chocolate-colored mutt, Choco, who is a Labrador pit bull mix.

Dr. Lisa grew up around chiropractic but pursuing it as a life path didn’t hit her until later. “I have been receiving chiropractic adjustments my whole life, since the age of 7 months,” she says. “Although chiropractic has always been a part of my life, I did not consider it as a career until my second year of college when I visited my chiropractor and randomly asked, ‘How do you become a chiropractor?’ I called and transferred the next quarter. The rest is history.”

Although she has worked in no fewer than seven cities, Dr. Lisa really appreciates her new clinic, the Forest Acres location in Columbia.

“I love my new family at The Joint,” she says. “All the doctors, staff and owner are caring and helpful, and I feel right at home.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Lisa says the one thing she must have in her refrigerator is a staple of good gut health. “”My most recent food addiction is Chobani Flip Greek Yogurt,” she says. “I love all the flavors, but I really like the key lime crumble.”

When it comes to the foursome she would love to sit down to dinner with, Dr. Lisa says she would like to touch base with her forefathers.

“My mother is a genealogist and has discovered that we have quite an eclectic lineage,” she says. “I know people don’t want to hear about family members, but I think I would like to pick some of their brains to see what kind of blood runs through my veins. To pick four, I would have to choose King Henry VIII, along with Ivan the Terrible; William Brewster, who piloted the Mayflower; and my great great grandmother, who was a Cherokee chief’s daughter. I would love to know how they lived, their success and challenges.”

Dr. Lisa is very proud that she earned a black belt in taekwondo, and some of the coolest things she has done have been the most rewarding.

“Living and working in Peru for four years was an extremely rewarding challenge,” Dr. Lisa says. “Sergio and I started a practice in a little fishing village on the coast with a sunset view. We introduced chiropractic to a population that had never experienced it and saw many life-changing events.

“I also became fluent in Spanish. Learning a second language was on my bucket list and I was able to check it off. It was a very tranquil and fulfilling life.”

Dr. Yolanda Johnson joined The Joint Chiropractic family in 2019 with her arrival at the Forest Acres location in Columbia. A graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, she went on to receive her doctorate of chiropractic in 1999 from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is having the ability to help patients relieve pain without the harmful side effects of medication,” Dr. Johnson says. “I love educating patients on how to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction as well as prevent future injury.”

Dr. Johnson grew up in Blackville and worked previously in Greenville.

“I love spending time with my family,” she says. “I enjoy watching professional and college football, good food, and relaxing by the pool.”

Dr. Johnson vividly recalls the moment that impacted her career choice. “I went to an event and a doctor was talking about how, with a hand adjustment, he could release a power in the patient that could free healing,” she says. “I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor.”

She derives special pleasure from working so geographically close to Fort Jackson.

“This location is near a military base,” she says. “I love having the honor of serving our soldiers and their families.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

If Dr. Johnson could create her dream dinner party, she could probably guarantee herself a good time. “I would invite Oprah Winfrey because she inspires me, and LeBron James because he is my favorite basketball player,” she says. “Ellen de Generes is so funny I think it would be fun. I would also include Beyonce so I can hear her sing and because she is Beyonce.”

Dr. Johnson says the coolest thing she ever did wasn’t so much about her. “I would have to say one of the best things ever was watching my nephew at 6 host a program at church, and watching my niece at 9 sing a solo in church,” she says. “It was cool because when I was their age, I was terrified to speak in public, and to see them do it made me so proud.”
