Meet The Doctors

Dr. Yolanda Johnson, D.C. is a Chiropractor, Clinic Director at Forest Acres

Dr. Yolanda Johnson joined The Joint Chiropractic family in 2019 with her arrival at the Forest Acres location in Columbia. A graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, she went on to receive her doctorate of chiropractic in 1999 from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is having the ability to help patients relieve pain without the harmful side effects of medication,” Dr. Johnson says. “I love educating patients on how to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction as well as prevent future injury.”

Dr. Johnson grew up in Blackville and worked previously in Greenville.

“I love spending time with my family,” she says. “I enjoy watching professional and college football, good food, and relaxing by the pool.”

Dr. Johnson vividly recalls the moment that impacted her career choice. “I went to an event and a doctor was talking about how, with a hand adjustment, he could release a power in the patient that could free healing,” she says. “I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor.”

She derives special pleasure from working so geographically close to Fort Jackson.

“This location is near a military base,” she says. “I love having the honor of serving our soldiers and their families.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

If Dr. Johnson could create her dream dinner party, she could probably guarantee herself a good time. “I would invite Oprah Winfrey because she inspires me, and LeBron James because he is my favorite basketball player,” she says. “Ellen de Generes is so funny I think it would be fun. I would also include Beyonce so I can hear her sing and because she is Beyonce.”

Dr. Johnson says the coolest thing she ever did wasn’t so much about her. “I would have to say one of the best things ever was watching my nephew at 6 host a program at church, and watching my niece at 9 sing a solo in church,” she says. “It was cool because when I was their age, I was terrified to speak in public, and to see them do it made me so proud.”

Dr. Kayla Cooper has had a wide reach as a member of The Joint Chiropractic team since joining the staff in March 2019; she works out of several different locations, including Forest Acres, Killian Crossing, Harbison and Lexington.

She majored in biology and earned a minor in chemistry at Presbyterian College in Clinton before getting her doctorate of chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida.

“The thing I love about being in the chiropractic field is being able to offer all people help regardless of anything else; everyone with a spine living in earth’s gravity is a great candidate for an excellent chiropractic patient,” she says. “It’s also gratifying to help with major current crisis, specifically the care of our military members and veterans and those who seek musculoskeletal pain relief through opioids. These populations of people are primed to be taken care of by excellent chiropractors. In doing so, our country will be healthier and have better posture.”

A product of Lexington, Dr. Cooper worked previously in Irmo and Orangeburg. In her spare time she loves traveling, fishing, going to the beach, and relaxing with friends and family, including husband Tyler, their two sons, and a German short-haired pointer named Rambo.

She had chiropractic ingrained in her at an early age.

“I was born in Iowa, less than an hour away from the oldest and first chiropractic college, Palmer,” Dr. Cooper says. “As my sister and I moved around with our family, our mother would always take us to see the chiropractor no matter where we lived, and she would call around looking for a ‘Palmer doc.’ So I knew that if I was going to become the ‘family chiropractor’ that my family always envisioned, I would go to Palmer.

“After college, I was unsure what to do, and was enrolled into the RN program at Midlands Tech. I realized one day that I wouldn’t be an awesome nurse or MD because I am very emotional and not good at bad news -- or bodily fluids. It was the second summer after I graduated from Presbyterian College that I started chiropractic school at Palmer in Florida. ... It was a perfect fit for me and I loved it.”

In her current role, she is able to practice where she grew up.

“I thoroughly enjoy being able to treat people from all sides of Columbia and enjoy being able to explore different sides of town as well,” she says.

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Cooper says the one thing she always keeps in her refrigerator is filtered water “because water is the most important thing you can have.”

If she could have any four people from history at a fantasy dinner party, Dr. Cooper says she would include chiropractic pioneer BJ Palmer, Hippocrates, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and baseball player Jim Abbott.

“Palmer developed this fine profession we call chiropractic, and Hippocrates was the father of modern medicine, so I would love to have a scholarly discussion with them about the current state of health and healthcare in the world,” she says. “Oprah is one of the most influential figures of my lifetime. I have watched her since I knew how to watch a television, and her journey as a woman in a man’s world is one that profoundly inspires me.

“As for Jim Abbott, I had his baseball care when I was a young girl, and the idea that he can become a major league pitcher with only one hand is very inspirational; what an example to the world that you can reach your dreams no matter your physical limitations.”

The coolest thing she has ever done, she says, “was creating two brand new humans.”

“Outside of that, participating in a 10-day clinic abroad in the West Indies was the coolest thing I’ve done. I had the privilege of being selected to go to an island called Bequia -- the second island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines -- to treat the population with chiropractic care,” Dr. Cooper says. “The whole island is 7 square miles and economically categorized as third world. The people were so excited that we were there, and we went to all corners of the island and every school on the island.

“Treating so many kids was the highlight for me. Watching them and their teachers and parents enjoy the benefits of chiropractic, which they do not typically have access to, was a real life-changing experience. The pure joy and happiness that exuded from the population on Bequia is something I try to carry with me all the time.

“And one of the bars had whale vertebra as bar stools. Coolest thing I have ever seen.”

Dr. Chucky Jordan was born and raised in Mullins, SC. Dr Jordan served in the US Army from September 1998 - February 2004. He also attended Keiser University, Port St Lucie, FL, earning his degree in Sport Medicine in the year 2011. Dr. Jordan also attended Logan University, in Chesterfield Missouri, graduating in April 2015, and earned his Master’s in Nutrition and Huiman Performance in April 2019. His first job was working at Prime Care of the Lower Pee Dee, in Lake City, SC. He later opened BioSpine Health and Wellness in Lake City, SC in August 2016.

A hobby of his is riding motorcycles, but only when others are not around, he likes to relax at home and watch Family Guy. A guilty pleasure of his and one thing that must stay stocked in the house is Butter Pecan Ice cream. Specifically, Breyers Brand! His perfect dinner party would consist of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille Oneal, and Bill Gates. All of them have performed at the highest level and are great minds at business. The coolest thing he has done is serving his country and raising three incredible young men.

Dr. Stephanie Boyd was raised in Sumter, SC. She attended Alabama State University earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Boyd matriculated to Life University earning her doctorate in chiropractic medicine.

The one thing that Dr. Boyd loves and enjoys about being a chiropractic physician is that she gets to assist her patients heal from acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries with the chiropractic adjustment and lifestyle modifications. "I love helping my patients achieve optimal and sustainable health naturally," she says.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading a good book, shopping ( just a little) cooking for her family, and spending quality time with her friends and family who she loves dearly. A guilty pleasure of hers and one thing that must stay stocked in her freezer is cookies and cream ice cream. Specifically, the Lactaid brand!

Dr. Boyd's perfect dinner party would consist of Jesus Christ, Oprah, Gandhi, and Mother Teresa. Each of her selected guests promotes world peace, transparency, integrity, honesty and to LOVE thy neighbor and Dr. Boyd lives her life by those standards.

The coolest thing she has ever done is serve her country in the United States Army Reserves. Dr. Boyd and her husband have one amazing son.
