Stuffing Recipes Fit for a Health Book

By Brandi Swieter

National Stuffing Day takes place in November, and rightly so. The dish makes an excellent addition to the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals so many families create. Now is the time to start trying out recipes so the right one gets chosen for the big feasts. Stuffing recipes fit for a health book are possible so everyone can enjoy it without worry of the extra calories.

Paleo Stuffing

The paleo diet is a popular option utilized by many. Paleo stuffing is a possibility on this diet. It's lower in calories and fat than traditional stuffing recipes but still contains plenty of protein and fiber. This stuffing recipe calls for coconut oil, coconut flour, sea salt, baking soda, and eggs to create the bread. It then requires ground sausage, chopped celery, chopped onion, sliced mushrooms, chicken broth, sage, and poultry seasoning.

Breadless Stuffing

A lot of the fat and calories in stuffing comes from the bread. A breadless stuffing would help to limit things and keep the recipe healthy. Mushrooms, garlic, celery, onion, sage, and eggs are also used in this version. Chicken bouillon cubes, extra virgin olive oil, and garbanzo beans make up the difference.

Quinoa Stuffing

Quinoa is one of the popular health food choices as of late. It provides a gluten-free alternative to the traditional stuffing versions. Vegetable stock, quinoa, butternut squash, zucchini, cranberries, dried apricots, and onion make up the majority of this dish. Add in lime juice, olive oil, and parsley for flavor.

Herb and Apple Stuffing

Apples are popular in the fall. The versatile fruit can be added to nearly any dish, including stuffing. An herb and apple stuffing recipe is a top choice for holiday meals. Parsley, rosemary leaves, sliced almonds, unsalted butter, and pepper will add flavor while French bread, celery, onion, apples, and chicken stock make up the main mixture. Limit calories by taking just a small portion and be sure to add other fruits and vegetables to the plate next to the slice of turkey.

Enjoy stuffing for the holidays and throughout the year without worry by choosing a healthy recipe. Even health books can contain stuffing recipes as long as they follow the rule of being low-fat and limited on calories. Every dish can be made healthier with some simple substitutions.
